INSPIRATION:
When different culture meets art: mind-bending furniture plays with perspective to create inexplicable historical fusion. MOLT was inspired by the golden age of Chinese furniture design, and its reputation and influence have spread far beyond China. Ming style fuses the Chinese ideologies of Confucianism and Taoism followed by the literati, who saw design as a way to bring about harmony in life by creating simple, precise and elegant designs inspired by the natural world.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
MOLT, a transformation of the Chinese chair, was inspired by Western design. MOLT used the idea of “anamorphosis” in the furniture to express distort perspective. The front angle appearing to be the ancient chair of Chinese emperor’s has a symbol of power, while the floating armrests represent honour, but when the experiencer walks around it. It transforms into a Western rocking chair with two elegant curved bands attached to the bottom of the legs.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
MOLT are using anamorphosis to create the furniture art piece which appears to change based on your perspective. A distorted projections requiring the experiencer to occupy a specific vantage point to constitute the story. This furniture enthusiasts came across a sculpture that had hidden within its two different pictures. Oblique angles of the furniture would created impressive sculptures that transcend from the Western culture and the Chinese culture from a viewer’s perspective.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project began in December 2015 in California, USA and was shown to the public in February 2016 in New York, USA.

The whole chair is made from walnut. Utilizing the natural characteristic of the walnut’s grain and color palette, the aesthetics emphasize the rich history of Chinese craftsmanship.
