DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Octo

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Pendant Lamp

INSPIRATION:
The inspiration for this project was the situation the world is right now, looking to design a lamp that could create the least amount of waste possible, while begin a modern and aesthetic piece, inspiring myself in Dieter Rams principles of design.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Octo is a pendant lamp, that explores the concept of modern lighting. It consists of eight panels that form an octagon, and an inner metal structure that supports the lamp. The geometric pieces create a combination that transmits the perception of force, and the combination of materials create a contrast of hard and soft textures. Octo has an easy assembly, thanks to its intuitive design.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The interaction between Octo and the user is smooth. From the moment the user gets the lamp, it takes it out of its flat packaging, and can easily assemble all the pieces together. Joining the covers with the interior structure and adding the light source, Octo can be assembled in less than a minute.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in February 2018 in and finished in May 2018, in Kortrijk, Belgium, Howest University.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
To design with sustainability in mind, Octo is a product that overcome a EcoDesign analysis, where there were made several iterations, and changes to the concept, to end up with the most sustainable concept, the EcoDesign looked in several categories, like materials, manufacturing process, packaging, transport. It researched the whole lifecycle of the product, included circular economy factors to the design.

CHALLENGE:
The hardest part during the development of this design was during the EcoDesign Analysis, as there had to me a lot of research about the materials and production process. As well it was hard personally because it was developed during my semester abroad in Belgium, where there were a lot of cultural shock, and difficulties with the language, making it hard sometimes to really transmit what I wanted to say to my mentors, and when getting their feedback on my process.
