DESIGN NAME: The Spiral DNA
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Exhibition
INSPIRATION: The architectural form is inspired from "source of life" double-helix DNA, which is also the totem mark of the biomedical industry. By elaborate combination of the external shading blinds and the indoor spiral ramps around the courtyard, an external and internal double-helix DNA shape is formed, resonating with the main theme of biomedicine, namely DNA. The Exhibition Center manifests such unique features of the biomedical industry characterized by sense of science and technology.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Zhengzhou Airport Biomedical Park aims to build an image with demonstrative effect. The Exhibition Center as a small-scale public building for exhibition is designed for industry promotion and image display from architectural form and service space. The design combines the surrounded outdoor sunshade louvers with the ramps circling around the indoor atrium, forming the internal and external double helix DNA shape, which echoes the motif of DNA biomedicine, and also solves the needs of customers.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The core space of the center uses double helix structure thus creates a vertical space combined with the central landscape. Its exterior uses metal louvers hovering from the surface waterscape until reaching the roof platform and the interior is organically connected in series via spiral ramps which form life trails, and create coherent and convenient internal flow lines among floors. Three ellipses with different functions rotate in different directions, forming a variety of interesting spaces.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Location: Zhengzhou Airport Economy Zone, Zhengzhou, Henan Province, China

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The architectural form is inspired from source of life double-helix DNA, which is the totem mark of biomedical industry. By elaborate combination of external shading blinds and the indoor spiral ramps around the courtyard, an external and internal double-helix DNA shape is formed. To break through the stereotype of common exhibition centers, the designer adopts the same design method as the art museum space, which results in the ramp like a DNA helix in the sunshine coming into the courtyard.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The project has complete functions. The interior space of the building consists of exhibition space and office logistics. In the design of the building, we fully considered the application of energy saving, emission reduction and low carbon technology, in order to achieve the purpose of high efficiency and low operation. The building scheme makes it easier for the building to make a rapid response when the to changes and transformations in functions are in need.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The biomedical industry is called an industry without ceiling because of its advancement, innovation and ample room for development. The Exhibition Center manifests such unique features of biomedical industry characterized by sense of science and technology, insight into future, pure and rigorous attitude towards scientific research and humanistic care for its users, which are set up by us in the original design. It also indicates the pursuit of us as an industrialized public service platform.
CHALLENGE: The Client needs a building that has display function and can represent the biomedical industry while being the image of the
opening area of this park.
The design ingeniously combines the surrounded outdoor sunshade louvers with the ramps circling around the indoor atrium, forming the internal and external double helix DNA shape, which echoes the motif of DNA biomedicine, and also solves the needs of customers.
