DESIGN NAME: Villa Vento
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential Villa
INSPIRATION: Nestled in Sentosa Cove off the coast of Singapore, Villa Vento conjures the image of a yacht. It was inspired by the iconic C42 cabin cruiser, and thus conjures the image of a boat driving on water. It is one of two adjacent bungalows designed for the same client on Sentosa Island, reflecting a period when Massimo Mercurio designed buildings with some affiliation with objects. Set by the water, it blends ultramodern design with the soothing harmonies of the water.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A nod to a cabin cruiser: the villa has a vaulted roof, cabins and deck, and is swathed with pearl white walls with a metallic glazing replicating a hull. Though its entrance crosses a moat, the interior leans towards resembling that of a sleek boat. Rooms were designed to look like luxe cabins, with small, rounded, forward-slanting windows and cozy intimate bathrooms. An entertainment space mimics a grand stateroom. Everything inside is designed to be representative of a boat.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: What happens is a staged arrival sequence where one crosses a moat as though leaving the land for a floating vessel. Inside the entry, the full view is further delayed by an entry vestibule with an early sculpture designed by Massimo, Feng which means wind, a spiralling representation of a whirlwind set in a small fountain. The initial circulation through the house, then, is indirect, leading around the central stairwell, past the kitchen and dining area until the full view is revealed.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Villa Vento is located in the island of Sentosa in Singapore, a mere 15 minute drive from downtown. It is the only part of Singapore where non-residents can buy land freehold. Due to the complexities of the building and difficulties with the contractor, the construction started in 2009 and completed in 2016.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Villa Vento defies the box form with no internal columns; the exoskeleton is the structure. The design intent of rounded and slated concrete elements, walls, and glass were a challenge to build. Use of timber and travertine elements alludes to the continuous surfaces of boat interiors. It has a powerful orthogonal ground floor framework thrusting towards the canal, as well as an upper level defined by the vaulting roof. The interiors merges with the landscape and leaves the structure of the building to inhabit the site in an assertively graphic gesture.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Built area is 680 sqm. For further details, please refer to the document attachment of this submission.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Located on the tranquil eastern coast of Sentosa Island, Sentosa Cove is the first and most exclusive marina residential community in Singapore that offers tropical resort living. The desired lifestyle architecture of Vento is to be generally tropical and to fit into the context of Sentosa Cove. With a seaside theme and lifestyle that was gravitating around the nearby One Degree 15 Marina, even the interiors of Vento resembles that of a high-end motorboat.
CHALLENGE: A great interest to the client is feng shui. The client would ask for his feng shui master to approve the design, and in particular, the layout planning. The personal exploration of Massimo Mercurio on Buddhism in early life empowered him with a broad understanding of Chinese philosophy, and communication was made smooth between Architectural principles and feng shui theories.
