| DESIGN NAME: Seychelle PRIMARY FUNCTION: Outdoor Folding Sofa INSPIRATION: The Seychelle sofa design was inspired by the desire to bring the comfort of indoor living outside, while at the same time resolving the issues of storage, weather and UV deterioration. Quality and longevity of products are important in our resource poor world. In the design process the desire was to maintain the simplicity of curves and soft lines, to achieving a more timeless form . The open sofa is designed to be cosy and inviting- a place to lay down and read a book even on a cool day and be always ready for use at a moments notice. . UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Seychelle is designed to enclose the sofa within a durable protective shell, and look like something more than just a storage box. It also expands forward and not backwards when opened, so that it can be placed close to walls to utilise minimal space and function as a bench seat or sun bed when closed. The choice of marine fibreglass for the shell gives a barrier that will far outlast timber, while also allowing for the shell to accomodate potentially for a variety of shell surface finishes. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Opening and closing the sofa requires one action, locking into position when open. Pulling the handle toward you releases the the rear support allowing the sofa to close. The soft close and opening is assisted by 2 gas struts. The sofa will comfortably seat 3 adults and will not release while someone is seated for occupant safety. Pressure sensors and remote opening can also be adapted. Speaker mounts are placed behind the revolving arm panels, for future adaptation of bluetooth entertainment. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started at the beginning of 2014 in Melbourne Australia. it taking hundreds of hours in design trials over the following few years, on a part time basis. On the advice of my patent attorney In 2015 i moved the development to Europe for further research and then Vietnam to seek manufacturing possibilities. I presented the first model at the innovative design fair at the Bella Centre Copenhagen and received a very positive reaction. I am now seeking the right interest. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Designed for long life and durability. The out protective shell is marine grade fibreglass. Designed to allow for rain protected ventilation to prevent moisture buildup and mould. The internally stored sofa and mechanism are of a high-grade marine quality to greatly maximise the lifespan. Space saving and ease of use also were a major consideration. Chair height when closed and sofa height when open. The rear of the sofa can be placed within a few cm of walls and opened without making contact. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Length: 2,080 mm (83: inches) Closed depth:910 mm (35 3/4: inches) Open depth: 1,000 mm (39 1/2 inches ) Height closed: 500mm (19 3/4 inches) Internal mechanism is fully enclose and made from 304 Stainless steel, can be up graded to 316 at an additional cost. The outer shell is high strength marine grade fibreglass The Upholstery is UV rated high marine grade Shield leather from Goodrich global. Bench seat top marine grade Flexiteek. The overall weight of the 3 seater is 110 KG TAGS: Seychelle, self-storing furniture, outdoor furniture, innovative furniture, practical furniture, innovative outdoor furniture, outdoor sofas RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The materials were selected to work together in avoidance of any potential corrosive effect on each other. Made from a combination of stainless steel and aluminium using PPE spaces between metals. The marine grade fibreglass were an obvious choice, and with new technical developments this material has become recyclable for use in high strength concrete and is not a drain on natural resources. The lifespan of marine fibreglass can be at minimum a few decades as with boat hulls and are strong. Although the sofa is stored within the shell while not in use it was also important to use high grade marine fabrics. While the shell itself can withstand a storms the interior breaths. The upholstery is also eco-friendly, marine grade and highly abrasive and mould,resistant. CHALLENGE: The sofa was designed to have a soft flowing look. The sofa arms and rotating panels, seat back and base drop down inside the shell when closed. The outer fibreglass shells had to be a particular shape that could not be compromised by too easily giving into the technical challenges, that could detract from the desired overall appearance. It was decided that every component, even internally stored should be weather resistant. With a simple maintenance regime this product will have years of life. . NAME: SEYCHELLE PROFILE: This is a new start up company, registered in Denmark at the beginning of 2019. The first 3 design releases are all outdoor pieces designed by Maurice Lacy. These include the patented SEYCHELLE sofa as entered into the A-design Awards , the SEYCHELLE ottoman and SEYCHELLE storage coffee table. The coffee table will soon incorporate a solar panel topped a range of electronic supplements. Maurice lacy Designs market goal is the supply of high end long life products for export. As the company develops, the intension is to collaborate with fellow designer friends and electronic engineers from Asia, Australia and Denmark. The goals of the company is to bring different cultural influences together as one international team. A sales percentage will also be set aside for humanitarian projects in Southeast Asia, such as the non profit Blue Dragon Organisation. Maurice Lacy Designs IVS is still at the early stages of seeking the right counterparts in further development and manufacturing, so as to reach the best possible outcomes for innovative and quality design. At the same time the idea is to not necessarily be confined to furniture design only. The company will soon welcome in a talented fresh young Danish designer. |
