| DESIGN NAME: Tirupati Illustrations PRIMARY FUNCTION: Environmental Graphics INSPIRATION: The inspiration for these illustrations were the elements used in a typical Hindu ritual - the incense smoke and the flowers offered to the deities. Colors strongly associated with temples are used - golds, reds and blues. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The brief was to design wall graphics for Tirupati International airport which represents the culture, identity and traditions of the people of Tirumala and Tirupati. One of the holiest Hindu Pilgrim spots in India, it is considered the “Spiritual Captial of Andhra Pradesh”. The Tirumala Venkateswara temple is the famous pilgrimage temple. The people are simple and devout and the rituals and customs permeate their everyday lives. The illustrations are intended to be wall graphics first and then later can be used for promotional merchandise for tourism. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The end user will find these graphics when entering the Tirupati airport and as such will be welcomed into the culture of Tirupati. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in November 2018 and lasted for two weeks. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: For the wall - the graphics can be marked out with the help of a projector for guidance and then later hand painted. Alternatively, they can be digitally printed on wall papers and pasted on to the designated wall. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: - TAGS: tirupati, indian, god, goddesses, hindu, religion, mudras, art, flowers, incense, culture RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research included interviews with pilgrims who have visited the temple as well as a few natives. CHALLENGE: The challenge in this particular project was making the illustration as respectful as possible and yet modern at the same time considering its applications.
