DESIGN NAME: National Trade Center
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Office
INSPIRATION: The iconic building -165m tall- replicates the unique silhouette of a bamboo shoot – a plant commonly found in Taichung which symbolizes prosperity in Chinese culture. This design is deemed to enrich the city skyline while celebrating a cultural symbol.
The city master plan requires gradual set back of the tower as the floor level rises. The building intelligently converts this restriction into creative concept that concurrently responds to local culture.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: NTC -National Trade Center- tower is located in the emerging CBD in Taichung, with convenient access to train station and public transport. Its innovative interpretation of the urban setback rules allows natural integration into the urban fabric. Meanwhile, as the traditional meaning embedded in the bamboo shoot implies, the unique form of the building has not only offered a cultural identity to the project itself, but also sets the tone of this new district with its landmark feature.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: -
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The contstruction of the project located in the emerging CBD in Taichung-Taiwan- started in December 2015 with a full completion and public opening in February 2018.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Architecture, Building and Structure Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The elliptical shape allows maximum light penetration to the office area.
Vertical greening with local plant resources on the east and west façades as well as the rooftop enhances energy efficiency. In addition of offering an outdoor experience with a pleasant view, solar panels and windmills are located on the top of the tower in order to achieve sustainability requirements. The whole design process involves BIM and parametric system, maximizing building performance under rigorous control.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Floor area: 1000 to 2000 square meters per floorplate
Width 77m x Depth 35m x Height 165m
Structure: Mixed Steel-Concrete structure for construction timing efficiency and compliance with rigorous climate requirements (typhoon).

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design offers a comprehensive urban image, reflecting both the city master plan intention and traditional Chinese culture. The optimized floor plans vary from one level to another, activating the banal working environment by providing vertical sky garden and balconies. The flexible space usage ensures worker satisfaction and promotes healthier work style.
CHALLENGE: The city master plan requires gradual set back of the tower as the floor level rises. The building intelligently converts this restriction into creative concept that concurrently responds to local culture. The elliptical shape allows maximum light penetration to the office area. The faceted façade undulates with horizontal awnings, distinctive rain covers and window-walls to emphasize the unique curvy shape of the building.
