DESIGN NAME: Airplane Chess
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Board Game
INSPIRATION: We worked with the Puma team to discover what influencers feel is iconic to the brand with the green Puma shoe box and the suede shoe
both proved iconic. We thought a board game was the perfect idea to create an interactive environment. We used the two essential PUMA elements to recreate the iconic Ludo chess set and stylise our own version with the shoebox replacing the box and the chess pieces replaced by miniature versions of the Puma suede.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In this project for Puma, we re-created a traditional board game Ludo, also known locally as Airplane Chess to be gifted to VIPs during the holiday. A popular 80s and 90s game, it generates a lot of nostalgic memories in its former players as well as being a fun game to play for everyone.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Open on the big shoe box and inside you will find a playing board and eight smaller shoe boxes. In each box you will find a pair of suede shoe pieces in different colors, they act as the chess pieces. Take everything out, follow the rules and play away.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Nov 2018 in Hong Kong and finished in December 2018.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The game structure of Ludo aligns perfectly with Puma. It is a game of four people travelling to a destination. And by changing the pieces from tokens to shoes, we have a pure connection to the brand's purpose. We first determined the best size for the shoe chess piece with the factory makers. From there we made the 3D model to create a mold and design the rest of the playing board, box set, mini shoe box around the size of the chess piece. We kept the outer box as cardboard to mimic exactly the material of an actual shoe box and the paper game board is the same paper source you will find in traditional version.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We wanted to amplify brand awareness for Puma and elevate the brand image. The game structure of Ludo aligns perfectly with PUMA. It is a game of four people travelling to a destination and by changing the pieces from tokens to shoes, we have a pure connection to the brand’s purpose. We want the influencers, who have played this game in their childhood, to have their memories triggered and had a chance to share their stories with their kids and families, while creating new ones with Puma.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part of the design is to first develop the 3D model of the Puma Suede and getting the size right first as the rest of the board game's actual sizes are based around the shoes. We worked with the factory to understand what details need to be enhanced in order for some of the details in the shoes to be recognisable. From there, it was developing the rest of the game with the traditional materials of the old game in mind. At the end it was a success as the emergence of this game set provoked a lot of childhood memories.
