DESIGN NAME: Modularis
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Shelf
INSPIRATION: Modularis is designed to be assembled according to the needs of the user. Inspired by the way Lego building blocks are used to construct different forms, Modularis serves as a multi-functional shelf that adapts to different spaces. Therefore, it provides the flexibility, not only to create personalized shelves, but also to rearrange them as much as needed or desired.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Imagine shelf modules designed to be assembled to adapt to different spaces according to the measure and taste of the user, allowing for a wide variety of shelving designs to be composed of the same units. The modules are ecologically made of tobacco agglomerate board, which is made up of the tobacco stems from the harvest. Relief stickers can provide each module with a theme or category such as braille, language, genre, etc., allowing the shelving use to be universal. But the most important aspect of this product, is that the modules provide a long lasting shelving system by design.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The shelving is composed of several standardized modules that are held together by expanders between them. The whole piece is then fixed to the wall with hidden mounting brackets.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2010 in La Habana and finished in August 2010 in La Habana

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: As a result of a primary investigation on the current trends in the field of shelfs, technologies and design, it was determined that customers often don’t choose shelving furniture based on design taste, but rather on what they can fit in their homes. Space is the primary marker for what is often purchased by clients on the market, not preference. This is why Modularis was developed as a modular system. It provides a different approach to shelving, one that is much more flexible and durable than most other traditional options
Regarding the materials needed to make Modularis, it was observed that currently there are not many environmentally friendly options available on the market. This is why agglomerate made from the residues of tobacco crops was selected. It contains nicotine and is therefore very efficient at keeping furniture safe from pests.
CHALLENGE: The challenge with this design was finding a module shape that, similarly to the golden ratio, could create larger shapes by following the order of a single model. The idea was to slice a square into 4 equal parts that are not squares, but rather trapezoids, that when combined with each other could form more complex patterns beyond the square itself.
