| DESIGN NAME: FLTRgo PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee Filter INSPIRATION: Justin Baird and Ridzert Ingenegeren, respectively the client and the designer, collaborated on the creation of a travel coffee filter. Justin likes to travel the world and to enjoy drip coffee. During his travelling, he often missed the tools for making a drip coffee. He came up with the idea to create something that could help him out, as well as others with the same problem. The product had to be easy to pack in order to save space while travelling, and had to be reusable. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A reusable and collapsible coffee filter for making brewed coffee, targeted at travelers. It is compact, lightweight and uses renewable materials: a bamboo frame and handle, and ethically-sourced Global Organic Textile Standard certified organic cotton. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The FLTRgo can be carried while traveling without taking up much space. The filter can be carried in a compact way with the handle folded in. In order to make coffee, simply fold the handle out, insert coffee grounds in the filter, and pour hot water over it. Afterwards, rinses out the filter and hang it out to dry while you enjoy your coffee. Afterwards, fold it in to carry it wherever you go. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design process started in the end of December 2016 in Berlin. It ended in the beginning of March 2017, after which the prototyping phase began in New York. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Bamboo plywood is cut, cotton is first stitched and then glued (with food safe glue) and pressed in place so that it stays within the bamboo frame. An aluminum Chicago screw is added to serve as a hinge for the handle. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 116 mm x 116 mm x 14 mm (folded) TAGS: travel, drip coffee, coffee, filter, brewing, sustainable, sustainability, lightweight, compact, reusable RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research was done into practical ways to work with bamboo, and into the types of food-safe fabrics and glues that can be used for the product. Another part of the research was into a type of stitch for the filter that would stay in place during use. The results are applied in the final design. CHALLENGE: The most challenging part was to come up with a way to hold the fabric of the filter in a reliable way, so that it could be used hundreds of times, and so that it looked good at the same time. In order to make the product look seamless during use, part of the bamboo frame is hollowed out, so that the filter and another bamboo piece can be glued in place without sticking out of the frame.
