DESIGN NAME: Volcano Eyes
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Observation Platform
INSPIRATION: The platform is created using local, traditional and contemporary essentials. The basic national symbol of the Turkish crescent can only be interpreted according to strict editing rules. On the floor plan, the schematic appearance of this basic form is an arc. The form of the observation point is connected with many threads to the abstract mass of the volcano and its geological sight.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Function: Observation platform
This project is an entry for the competition called Nemrut Volcano Eyes. The team designed a platform, revealing a 360 degree panoramic view to the Nemrut Volcano's caldera. From this site we are also able to get a perfect view to one of the largest crater lake in the world.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The monolithic geometry of the observation point creates space, mass, and generous details at the same time. However geometry results a rational, steel structure, utilizing the structural behavior advantages of the traditional tectonic, arch openings. The mass openings, formed along the regular arches, are rotated centrally in relation to each other, thus enabling the fullest panoramic view on different levels of the lookout point. The openings therefore control the traffic system of the lookout point and increase the duality between static and dynamic.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was made in May 2018 for the Nemrut Volcano Eyes Competition. It was one month to finish the project before the given deadline.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The platform is created from a few elements, taking in consider the environmentally responsible, cost-effective requirements, and the limited construction possibilities. The primary structure is made of steel, which can be easily transported to the terrain in small and lightweight elements. The secondary frame of the structure, the wire mesh is also a formwork, as well in the case of a gabion wall. In order to implement the construction is needed only the stones around mostly. Thus the building process requires a little energy and tools.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Size: 5,20 m x 5,20 m (bounding size)
Height: 4,80 m

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The team decided by using the most common national symbol, the crescent. This form fundamentally consists from arcs, it has many relations to the caldera mold and the unique landscape. After scanning the strict rules that creates this shape it is unequivocal to stay loyal to the original geometry. Furthermore, the adaptation could not be direct and immediately recognizable. In this design the strictly edited crescent evolves to 3D geometry while meating the functional expectations. By this modification the concept achieved to offer a panoramic multifuncional platform.
CHALLENGE: The design had to appear as a national artwork procreating contemporary concept in high standard. When designing the platform, get to know the turkish culture was the most difficult issue. Turkish motifs has unique meanings besides the enthralling forms. To cope with this issue, the team examined the most traditional turkish symbols like hamsa, crescent, tulip, rose, nazar and pomegranate. The research revealed many similarities between the Hungarian and the Turkish traditions.
