DESIGN NAME: Trophy Design
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Race Winners Award
INSPIRATION: Singapore Airlines brief was simply to design the 2014 Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix Trophy.
After thorough audits of past F1 Trophies, our aim was simple – Design a stunning and beautiful F1 Trophy.
With over 35 sketches of various themes, the final inspiration came from the Singapore Airlines logo itself.
Taking the bird graphic and bringing it life and into a 3D space.
Further inspiration came from the beautifully elegant Rolls Royce's ‘Spirit of Ecstasy’.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The F1 Trophy transforms the Singapore Airlines iconic bird graphic into a
uniquely crafted 3D sculptural work of art. Three gold stripes on each wing represent power, direction and speed while the smooth,
clean curves imbue a touch of elegance and beauty, synonymous with modern F1 cars. Seven rings on the black base pay tribute to the longevity of the world’s first F1 Night Race. The 24K gold-plated trophy, milled from solid aircraft-grade aluminIum blocks, is then lovingly hand-polished.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This is the 2014 Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix Trophy – A great way for the brand to connect with the F1 drivers and fans worldwide.
The lucky race winner taking the glory of holding the Trophy up high, with the media and audience alike taking mementos of the tremendous event.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The brief to the agency was early January 2014, the three day event,
was late September. But, prior to that, a showcase and media reveal planned for August.
The Trophy was designed and created in Singapore, manufactured in Malaysia, with TBWA overseeing all aspects of the production process.
The 2014 F1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix Winner’s Trophy was
awarded to race winner Lewis Hamilton.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Each F1 Trophy is milled meticulously from 4 solid aircraft-grade aluminium blocks – paying homage to both Singapore Airlines and curvy modern F1 cars. The three stripes, echoing the bird logo, and the inner wings are sumptuously plated in 24K gold. The seven rings on the shiny black base pay tribute to the longevity of the world’s first F1 night race. An additional ring is added for each subsequent year. All components are then hand-assembled with the F1 plaque completing the Trophy.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The Winner’s F1 Trophy weighs just over 5kgs, 580mm high and 185mm in diameter at it’s widest point. Since the launch of the 2014 F1 Singapore Airlines Trophy, the base increases in height with the addition of a ring for each subsequent year the race is held. The base references tyres of both the Singapore Airlines' planes and F1 cars.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Our research looked at many previous F1 Trophy designs, including other top-end sports eg. MotoGP. Identifying two issues: How to elevate a prestigious brand, making it synonymous with the F1 Singapore GP and how to take a flat bird logo, turning it into a 3D sculptural art piece. Previous designs weren’t beautiful nor had a wow factor. We wanted a trophy that was beautiful, curvy and stunning as modern F1 cars. A design that Singapore Airlines would be proud of, bringing their bird logo to life in a unique, interesting and elegant way.
CHALLENGE: Not often that you get a brief to design a trophy, especially one for the pinnacle of motorsport – A Formula 1 Trophy.
That in itself was a challenge.
We set about producing various sketches of various themes. After many rounds we homed in on one. The next challenge was to engage a partner that could take our design and help bring it to life.
Risis impressed us – they had the know-how and expertise.
The next challenge was to produce it and make it look beautiful.
