DESIGN NAME: Hina
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Japanese Bar
INSPIRATION: Hina is defined by the auxiliary lines of 30mm thick wood frames, delineating the ceilings, partitions, shelves and door frames. The grids are drawn by the building conditions to align the immovables and create a sense of intimacy because the old apartment has various spatial constraints such as exposed equipment, low ceilings and a residential floor plan divided by structural walls which significantly determine an impression of the space.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Located on the top floor of an old 14-story apartment next to the East 3rd Ring Road in Beijing, Hina is a Japanese-style bar consisting of a whisky bar and a private karaoke room, clad with wooden gridded frames to tighten up the environment. Backboards of the wood frames are finished with various materials such as sliced veneer, mirrored stainless steel or blue-gray paint to amplify a sense of irregularity.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Walking through the entrance, guests are greeted by illuminated whisky bottles displayed inside the framed shelves at the backbar. The karaoke room is soundproofed and equipped with acoustic boards to accommodate karaoke without disrupting the ambiance of the bar. Custom square sofas and tables designed for the karaoke room can be used in any combination as usage. The soundproof room is also integrated with the language of wooden grids continued from the bar counter.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in November 2016 and completed in January 2017 in Beijing, China.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The wood frames connected from the backbar cover the ceiling of the bar counter to organize a calming and inviting environment. The bar counter features white artificial marble, wood flooring and grey granite stones. The frames tighten up the space and create the spatial irregularity, while the various materials of the backboards produce multilayered atmosphere which is reinforced by the reflections of mirrored stainless steels.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 120sqm, 28 seats.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The targeted customer segment of Hina is a group of Japanese expatriates because they tend to be well-educated with a higher level of disposable income, and bars where they go drinking are extremely limited in Beijing. Since the expatriates are more segmented with a particular set of needs than others, the multifunctional karaoke room is designed to refer their specific demands.
CHALLENGE: The whisky bar and the karaoke room are created based on the research because the interior is divided into two primary spaces by the structural walls and a bath room at the center of the apartment. Another constraint of the building is a floor to slab height of 2450mm, and thus drywall ceilings framed by the grids are installed only on the ceilings above the bar counter and a table with lights and speakers, while the wooden frames create the intimate environment.
