| DESIGN NAME: Fei River Central Smart Garden Library PRIMARY FUNCTION: Library INSPIRATION: The library is located in the living center of the project and on the urban green axis. The center-clustered structure facilitates the daily life of residents, and meanwhile brings more people to the library, while the library is also enriching the neighborhood’s culture. The private courtyard of the library and the surrounding urban greenbelt together form a natural "green lung" of the whole project, providing plenty of public spaces for the surrounding residents. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project is located on the axis of the core financial business development area in Hefei, by the South Fei River. Designers hope to redefine the relationship between buildings, landscape and the public, and thereby derives an interpretation of contemporary public lifestyle. The overall project combines the urban-planning green space, focuses on creating a multi-subject urban-garden type living community. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The design starts from a cube, through different construction techniques, after reduction and overlay, finally finished with a curved interface in the main body, which subtly adapts to the surrounding environment. Seen from the distance, the distribution of patches and the volume size change with the angle, making the whole building look interesting and dynamic. The city square attracts people to stop by. One side of the building faces the water, seems light and floating with the reflection in the water; another side faces the roads, on that side the main body looks stretched, calm and smooth. Inside the library, the courtyard and the interior space are intersected in an order. The plants bring the inner space a natural and pleasant atmosphere. The primary and secondary courtyards interact with each other, enrich the vision of the readers and visitors, and ease their eyestrain. The internal and external space are separated by glass. On the first floor, high-transparent glass is used to create a sense of transparency, and to make it looks like a “floating island”. On the second floor, frosted glass is used to reflect vaguely, in order to create a sense of privacy. The blurry boundary between inside and outside brings a intimate relationship between people and space. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The using of black, white and gray color makes the building look like a sculpture, while the brown color brings a sense of warm. The interweaving of the glass and the flow of water dispel the dullness of the building. The glass connects indoor and outdoor spaces, brings changes of light and shadow, creates a dialogue between space and time, and makes the building look like a floating island in the city. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Floor area: 1760 square meters TAGS: Library, Architectural design, Architecture, multi-subject, living community RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The city square, the roof terrace and the landscape nodes altogether form a system that gives the public a concept of sharing and openness while they taking the rest, allowing different social activities in respective regions. People stepping on different floors and areas also enriches the visual effect of the spaces. According to the change of the function, the volume and display of the space are changed accordingly. The project allows people is mood to change naturally with the change of space. There exists a connection between architecture, landscape and the public. Almost all the traffic flow and space change is related to the center of the project. CHALLENGE: According to the eye level, the height of the arc wall is 2.1 meters, which ensures a proper proportion of the facade and a good visual perception. The large-span and column-free space is both aesthetics and energy-saving. To save the cost, the arc wall structure is firstly assembled by 1200 meters wide modular units, which made of stones in 600 meters wide and 1025 meters high, and then the modular units are combined to form the curvature of the entire facade.
