| DESIGN NAME: SurPlate PRIMARY FUNCTION: Marble Platter INSPIRATION: The design should be imaginative and transformable via the medium we use to express. The SurPlate is the opportunity to exam the possibilities of creating custom plate based on the available material and technologies. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: SurPlate utilizes leftover marble segments into unique shaped platter for many other applications. In Taiwan one of the most liked interior finish material is a marble stone. Therefore there are many stocks in each stone fabricators, and they carry leftover segments from each application and/or unusable due to cracks and damaged reasons. SurPlate design takes advantage of these stocks and applies fabricator's CNC machines to make into unique and likable platter for home. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The client purchased large sheet of white marble for their residential interior, and a few small sheets were left over. It is too precious to leave it unused. So we took it as chance to create unique and interesting shape of plate from those small sheet of marble leftovers. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Water Jet CNC Cutter with White Marble Stone SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Around / Less than 30 cm in diameter TAGS: Marble, CNC, WaterJet, Plate RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This is investigation of utilizing technology and sustainability. Digital technologies open up the possibility of redefining design for certain items. We think there are many opportunities for improving industrial condition to make it more sustainable yet beautiful. CHALLENGE: The hardest part of process was to figure out the machine capabilities and how to utilize the small sheet of Marble. Since each sheet is different in the natural pattern, we took the shape of plate specifically matching with the stone pattern.
