DESIGN NAME: Diversity
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Poster
INSPIRATION: The Celebration of Diversity Fair happens every year in Medellín, and I was asked to make the poster for 2018. My inspiration was drawn from a group of people that I saw. They were hugging each other. I thought about how perfect that was and how important it is for us to hug our differences. From there I started sketching a multiple people hug that turned into a party in itself. I played around with scale, nonsensical scenarios, and fun composition to achieve a very interesting and fun illustration. It's a piece that you can look at for a long time and find hidden things that make it very entertaining.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This illustration was made to be the poster for the Celebration of Diversity Fair that happens in Medellín, Colombia. It represents a communal hug where everyone is accepted as they are, and together they form a beautiful and balanced structure, just like we do in society. Our strength lies in our differences. This illustration has a lot of detail and textures. It makes it a very entertaining piece because the eye bounces around looking for details every time. It plays with scale, metaphors, colors and textures to deliver a message and make people smile.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The illustration serves as one poster for its main purpose. But every character was drawn is in its own separate layer. This helped transform the poster into a lot of different products, life size characters so people could take pictures next to them, schedule, Instragam posts, promotional material, a mural for people to color, etc.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in August 2018 and was finished in October 2018. It was used for the Diversity Fair in Medellín in October 2018.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Design research was mainly focused on diversity specific to Medellín, the city that the poster was made for. It started with data collection on races, ages, gender and disabilities so I could get a better understanding of the place and people this was going to be directed to. The poster also had a wide age range because the Fair is public to everyone, so it had to be all age appropriate and engaging. Data results were taken into consideration and then merged with design principles.
CHALLENGE: The main challenge of this illustration was illustrating as many characters as I could fit, minding composition, color, and of course diversity. It had to look as if everyone belonged but they had to be totally different from one another. Making it complex, yet easy for the eye to follow is a hard challenge that was very present in this project.
