DESIGN NAME: Between The Shores
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Information Brochure
INSPIRATION: Worldwide there are more refugees than ever before. People need to es- cape from their country because of war, mass starvation or exploitation while their human rights are often unheeded. Especially wealthy countries worry about immigrants and a big part of the population sees them as a potential danger for their culture.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Between the Shores wants to raise awareness for refugees and their crisis. Therefore, the brochure combines infographics with a story that is told by a Syrian girl. Hard facts and numbers, combined with the very personal journey of a refugee. To accomplish that, Between the Shores is designed in a convenient format which allows the audience to reference the story as well as the infographics. All information are kept simple to address parents, children, teachers and students.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The brochure creates a starting point for conversations about the refugee crisis for educational environments, such as schools. It gives enough information material to form an opinion which should be then discussed within peers. It gives the reader an idea of how important it is to talk about the crisis, rather than being a solution for it.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Since the project is based on hard facts and statistics, the topic needs to be narrowed down to specify which data has to be collected. Questions are: (1) Where do refugees come from and where do they go? (2) What do people think about refugees? (3) What countries are positive/negative towards refugees and immigrants? (4) What do refugees experience, how dangerous is their journey? The information are approached from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) which collects data and makes it available for public use.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge for this project is to work with the amount of data that was provided by the UNHCR. Data had to be correctly interpreted to avoid wrong assumptions. It had to be processed to make it comparable to each other and finally it had to be visualized in a way that is easy to understand and impactful.
