| DESIGN NAME: The Breakthrough PRIMARY FUNCTION: Public Art Sculpture INSPIRATION: The image of wings that gradually grow from weak to strong reflects the breakthrough in the process of confronting and overcoming challenges and difficulties. It provides children with exposure to art, inspiring their imagination and creativity. This is a symbol of the positive attitude Hillside would like their students and staff to maintain when facing ups and downs in life. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Breakthrough is an aluminum sculpture that is inspired by the teaching philosophy of Hillside Family Center. It is installed on the wall of the entrance of Hillside main campus in Rochester, NY. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Breakthrough is an interactive art with the students. The sunlight casts different shapes of shadow on the wall during different timing a day. In the winter the sculpture will carry snow to create a various look. The sculpture will grow with the students and accompany with them through every season. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Duration of production: 6 months in 2016 Location: Hillside Family Center, Rochester, NY FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Fine Arts and Art Installation Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The sculpture is made by digital fabrication and handcrafts from aluminum. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Varied TAGS: sculpture, public art, aluminum, birds, wings, school RESEARCH ABSTRACT: After surveying many possible sites of the public art for school, the designer has interviewed with the staffs of the Hillside Family Center and researched the history of the school. The whole process inspired the core concept of the sculpture. CHALLENGE: During the design process, because of the particularity of students, the designer kept communicating with school staffs to ensure he can accomplish his concept but also considerate students’ safety. Therefore, he adjusted the bottom of the elements to be flat to prevent students from hitting and climbing the sculpture. Furthermore, the choice of the materials was evaluated with the cost and durability. Climate, snowing, draining and rusty, all natural factors require considering due to the outdoor location.
