DESIGN NAME: Nature Balance
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residence House
INSPIRATION: The natural surrounding elements were our inspiration for this project. The site is perched on the edge of a beautiful river, a perfect terrain and orientation, providing the canvas to create a tranquil refuge to unwind after busy daily life.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Transparent, open, flexible, simple and receiving, the basis of this transformation is to be engaged with nature, bringing the outdoors in and creating an open plan environment of a fluid, versatile and comfortable space. Only the minimum furniture and art work are used, such that each object has its own breathing space.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Every floor has its own function to address the client's needs. The ground floor has an open space area including the kitchen, dining area and sitting area. The feature of the living room is the floating fireplace, complementing the views of the floating river. The second floor features the master bedroom, walk-in closet, master bathroom and secondary bedroom with wide sight lines and an uncluttered aesthetic. The lower basement level took an eccentric color palette with unique components to ensure the space was fun and uplifting.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project conceptual phase started in January 2016 and the construction phase finished in July 2017. This project was based in Shediac River, New Brunswick, Canada.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The core values of this transformation were to be engaged with nature by bringing the outdoors in and to create an open plan environment. The three key strategies consisted of relocating the central staircase to the north facing wall, eliminating several interior wall partitions and partially opening the second floor to the living room below. This created a flexible open plan and allowed for high elevated ceilings and large expanses of windows, thus inviting the outside nature inside the home.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: This residence has 207.5 m2 in total. It was a complete renovation of the property.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The main element of research was the study of the site in relation to its natural surroundings and orientation. Many trips were made to site to examine all variations of seasonal, climatic and lighting conditions, with particular reference to the river bordering the site and the main exterior focus of view from the open living area. Involving our clients by illustrating the subtle variances at site via renderings and site visits we created a perfect retreat for them through juxtaposition of the interior outdoor spaces and materials palette to provide our client with a year round sanctuary.
CHALLENGE: This existing residence had compartment living spaces prior to the renovation. The challenge of this transformation was the staircase's central location on the ground floor obstructing all site lines of nature. The intentions were to have open space for the public areas: kitchen, dining and living. By moving the staircase on the north facade wall, it creates a transparent, open, flexible, simple and receiving space, to suite their busy daily life and to be able to bring the outdoors in.
