DESIGN NAME: House in Ubrique
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential
INSPIRATION: The basin where town of Ubrique is set has required its architecture to adapt to its abrupt orography, placing us in a plot between medians on the edge of the historic center with a diagonal axis in section caused by the slope itself and that marks the guidelines of the project. Taking advantage of the local resources, we interpret and adapt the program of the traditional local dwelling: a “zaguán” (andalusian entrance hall) is created, this in turn articulates the interior - exterior, the functional program has been inverted in search of the best location for the living area, the buildable volume diminishes punctually allowing to create exterior spaces and the interesting "diagonal view " between the peaks of Caíllo and the Valley of Aljibe, the interior built surface is reduced to provide a greater connection and spatial richness to the home. The openings, controlled, are positioned in the volume after an analysis of the sunlight, bringing forth in its main elevation an austere, closed surface (typical of local popular architecture) and compositionally under an aureus scheme.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project of the dwelling attempts to search this relationship/duality duality in such an interesting section, at the same creating a dialogue with the popular architecture. Thus, the different sections of the house become the base discourse of development of the project, providing the house with an interior spatial richness that unites the functional program.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The main entrance space, triple height, is what makes the transition between the busy and narrow street and the interior of the house, referring to the traditional Zaguán. This hall offers a versatile space that serves as an entrance and play area for children, and is richly composed of three massive volumes that fly over it and whose shadows thrown by the large windows provide a spatial harmony that dignifies the traditional “zaguan” itself.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Location: C/ Doctor Serafín Bohórquez, p. 3. 11600. Ubrique, Cádiz, Spain.
Design year: 2015-16. Construction year: 2017-18.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: we interpret and adapt the program of the traditional local dwelling: a “zaguán” (andalusian entrance hall) is created, this in turn articulates the interior - exterior, the functional program has been inverted in search of the best location for the living area, the buildable volume diminishes punctually allowing to create exterior spaces and the interesting "diagonal view " between the peaks of Caíllo and the Valley of Aljibe.
CHALLENGE: The main façade is designed thinking of these interior visual relationships, natural lighting and considering the characteristics of the surrounding popular architecture (white, austere volumes and sloping tile roofs). Compositely, a modulated white Composite base hides the access openings and connection systems, in relation to the formal and austere traditional architecture, while the volume and composition of the holes are made based on the golden ratio that harmonizes the elevation.
