DESIGN NAME: Jinya Houston
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Ramen Bar
INSPIRATION: Showcasing craftsmanship was a primary element of this process and coupling this spectrum with a warm color scheme is meant to express a rustic and traditional atmosphere. In lieu of the bland choice of drywall, traditional Japanese stucco walls and rustic wood finishes create a more authentic dining experience. The modern design elements such as the exposed ceiling and flooring offer a visual contrast while maintaining a balanced budget and a more durable and easy maintain restaurant.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: For the new Jinya Ramen franchise in Houston, Texas we propose a design that combines modernity, traditionalism and elegance. Our proposal is not only efficient and comfortable but cleanly expresses the brand and the image of the Japanese noodle chain.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Although we were hired by the franchisee, we worked closely with corporate Jinya to help defining the design requirements. The process was highly interactive. We held numerous meetings with Jinya's CEO discussing the expectation of the restaurant. We also carefully coordinated with Jinya’s master chef to understand the restaurant’s daily operation and the requirements of the kitchen space. The corporate Jinya design guideline includes standards ranging from company logo to color of the Raman bowl. The intent of such comprehensive document is to make sure that every customer who visited a Jinya restaurant will enjoy the full Jinya dining experience. It was an interesting collaboration to incorporate the Jinya ideas into our design and Jinya’s belief that enjoying ramen is a ritual rather than merely a necessity inspired us tremendously throughout the design process. As a result, we were able to push the boundary and create a space where traditional Japanese culinary and modern dining experience interweaves. Some of the design elements used in our design later became the design standard of other locations throughout the country.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was completed in 2015 and it is located in Houston, Texas

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Instead of traditional material, we decided to use materials that celebrate traditional Japanese craftmanship. Such materials include Japanese stucco, wood finishes and murals.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The project is a 2,300 sf tenant improvement of a ramen restaurant in Houston Texas
TAGS: Japanese, Ramen, Restaurant
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We worked closely with the Jinya corporate chef and its CEO during the design process. As a result, we had an in dept understand of how the restaurant operate before we start the design process (from kitchen layout to how the ramen is served). This helps us tremendously on making design decisions down the road.
CHALLENGE: The goal of the design is to capture the essence of tradition Japanese dining experience while offering a contemporary environment. The result is a balance of both design qualities.
