DESIGN NAME: Heart of Young Grass
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Earring
INSPIRATION: This earring is designed for all mothers and daughters. The inspiration comes from an ancient poetry about farewell, in which children are the young grass, and mothers are the spring sun’s rays. “Can the young grass ever repay, the spring sun’s kind rays?” Ancient as it is, the poetry reflects the reality of modern days—young generations become the nomads, leaving family, changing habitation oftenly. The earring is a reminder of warm family love, and a blessing from our mothers or daughters.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design is inspired by ancient poetry but has a modern aesthetic, and contains a contemporary meaning which can echo with everyone who leaves their hometown. Instead of nostalgia, the earring represents blessing and gratefulness.
The form of the young grass is elegant and natural, with layering and overlapping details. The earring shows a creative use of colour stones and diamond with high quality akoya pearl. A variety of stone setting techniques are also demonstrated.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The pearls dance around as the wearer moves. The earring is not flat when seen from the side as the grass has multiple layers. Diamonds are also set at the back, extended from the front. Overall, interesting details are considered from every view to please the wearer.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in June 2018 in Toronto and finished in August 2018.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I did Literature research to find the classic poetry that best describes the love between mother and child and transform an ancient poetry into a modern design.
CHALLENGE: The most challenging part is how to develop a design from a poetry written in Dang Dynasty. After the young grass element is selected, I did research of grass in all kinds of form and tried to make it look three-dimensional instead of flat.
