DESIGN NAME: Lotus 1 Realism Collection
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lotus Rings, Earrings and Necklaces
INSPIRATION: The lotus flower is a reminder of the beauty that comes from change, the magic that a new beginning brings, and the seed of potential that’s buried in the most unlikely places. Quote by J.W.
Inspired by what the lotus symbolizes light and beauty, inner strength and determination, our Lotus Collection embodies these same feminine qualities that surround you. The beautifully created jewellery pieces elegantly capture the pure and graceful spirit of modern women today.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Lotus flower is designed realistically to include its intricate details (which most omit) like the stamen and seed pod with diamonds in a bezel setting. The beautiful design can be 3D printed, casted and manufactured.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Jewellery should be enjoyed. Hence it is vital that it is not to bulky or heavy, comfortable to wear and yet aesthetically pleasing. Of course, the labour and cost of manufacturing should also be considered like the design being easy and simple to manufacture and cost efficient.
My design of the collection has taken these factors very seriously.
Please see The Creative/Research Challenge for design details and specifications taken into account.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: It started in the early 2016. It took about 12 to 18 weeks from ideation to final design in 3D CADCAM models with multiple prototyping using 3D Systems Project 1200 for 3D printing to check to design specification and jewellery fitting.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I visited gardens and homes with Lotus flowers to study and photograph the subject in detail and further library research on all information about the Lotus and other related botanical background.
CHALLENGE: The most challenging was designing the very small-size Lotus stamens for traditional casting by hand. I was determined not to design them as pin heads and tried many variations of the stamen designs before settling for an organic-looking design. The third challenge was the Necklace. For the necklace to wrap nicely around the wearer’s neck, shoulder and chest, I drew a traditional technical drawing to ensure all the diamonds are properly set in multiple sections made up of a channel with gallery (to save on precious metal weight) and movable hinges to hold each section of the entire whole piece necklace together. This tedious process enables the complex-designed Necklace to fit beautifully and comfortably on the wearer. Thereafter, I proceeded to build the whole model in 3D CAD CAM. The necklace alone tool up 60-70% of the total time spent on the whole project.
