DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
A Bird of a Different Feather

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Picture Book

INSPIRATION:
Books published by Izumi Kyoka during his lifetime remain highly coveted by book collectors in Japan, due to the intricacy of their design and Kyoka's frequent collaboration with some of the foremost artists of his age, including names like Kaburagi Kiyokata and Komura Settai. We were inspired, in the creation of this English-language picture book version of one of Kyoka's most beloved stories, to simultaneously respect this tradition of beautiful "Kyoka books" as well as update it for 21st-century readers.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
"A Bird of a Different Feather: A Picture Book" is an abridged translation of Izumi Kyoka's 1897 short story "Kecho" with illustrations by Nakagawa Gaku. In this English-language version, we have striven to create not only an attractive book but an attractive material object, as well, in terms of visual design, details of materiality like paper choice and printing method, and the stylistic interplay between word and image on the page. For example, we chose a paper type whose special texture is reminiscent of materials from the Meiji Period (1868-1912).

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
This is a picture book designed to be read by both children (elementary school and up) as well as adults interested in Japanese art and literature.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
"Ehon kecho," the original Japanese-language picture book on which "A Bird of a Different Feather: A Picture Book" is based, is an abridged version of Izumi Kyoka's 1897 short story "Kecho" with illustrations by Nakagawa Gaku. It was planned and produced in 2012 as a commemorative publication for the 40th anniversary of the Izumi Kyoka Prize for Literature. And in 2017, for the prize's 45th anniversary, we produced an English version of "Ehon kecho." The result of that effort is "A Bird of a Different Feather: A Picture Book."

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Cover : okfloat-white 46, Y120kg; process: foil stamping and blind emboss (the embossed cover in its entirety emotes the spreading of a bird's wings). Front page : white aswan A, T51kg. Title page : white aswan 46, Y80kg. Text page (inside) : white aswan 46, T80kg. Endleaf : star dream (silver) 720 x 1020, T88kg. Gaku Nakagawa, who is an illustrator as well as Buddhist monk, created the book's illustrations with Adobe Illustrator on Mac. A new translation into English was created expressly for this picture book by Peter Bernard.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Book size : B5, W257mm x H182mm. Page count : 74 pages. Retail price : 2000 yen. Main font : Times New Roman Regular, non customized. Printed by : Cforce Inc. Bookbinding by : Book-Art Inc. Case bind, flat (square) back. ISBN : 978-4-336-06208-6. Nakagawa's delicate digital illustrations, made in Adobe Illustrator with a mouse, provided difficulty for printing as the color would seep and feather easily; however, the illustrations revealed a brilliant sparkling fantastic world after intense calibration. The book cover has a decorative calligraphic silver title by the calligrapher Hiroshi Ueta.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Design decisions were made by the team members; no user-oriented research was conducted in this regard.

CHALLENGE:
One of the greatest challenges was fitting the new English text into Nakagawa's images, which had been made for the original Japanese-language version of the book. Japanese text runs vertically in lines right to left, so we needed to take especial care to make sure the English text interacted with the illustrations in a way that was visually appealing on the page, paying especial attention to where and how to break the prose text into multiple lines per page.
