| DESIGN NAME: Saddle Seat PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chair INSPIRATION: My concept is driven by research of human behavior and user testing in schools. I noticed that we naturally want to fidget move around in our chairs, for example when we concentrate on our teacher, we tend to sit in a more alert position towards the front of our chair in a kind of riding position, whilst when we reflect, we tend to recline. In conclusion I was aware that in order to maintain interest and concentration it is important to keep active, even whilst sitting. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Saddle Seat is a new archetype of school chair. It is playful and engaging but also provides good posture and improved concentration. It leverages design to tackle both physical and mental issues that are currently overrunning our culture. A slumped posture makes people feel more passive and dull due to lower level of physiological stimulus. In later life, poor posture can act back issues, slipped discs and more serious diseases. Saddle Seat looks to promote good posture from an early age. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Users can sit with various kinds of way. They can sit sideways as they sit on the edge of chair when they concentrate. Also, they can ride on it like horse riding and they can lean on it when they have a break. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This is one of my final year project in BA. I started in October in 2017 and finished in April 2018 with another final project. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: It takes into consideration a reduction of manufacturing cost, decreasing material wastage and carbon footprint in production. The structure is made out of one piece of steel tube without welding in production. It can be stacked when it is transported. Students will be able to enjoy the aging of wooden components and cultivate a sense of care and longevity. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: the dimension is 520mm x 400mm x 700mm and less 4kg which is light for students to carry. It is a stacking chair so that people can carry some chairs at onece. TAGS: school chair, mental issue, furniture design, good posture, stacking RESEARCH ABSTRACT: First of all, I observed how people sit on chair and found some issues. Secondly, I researched the relations between sitting and mental and physical issues and checked scientific proof that supports my concept. CHALLENGE: It is very important to check how students use chairs. Therefore, I visited local schools and observe them. This ethos comes from his background, studying and working experiences in medical field and Japanese sense of care and appreciation of transition. He designs from domestic appliances to furniture with his Japanese and Western design philosophy. In 2018, Masahiko won an international design competition with his folding sheet metal stool, V stool. |
