| DESIGN NAME: Symbiotic Parasite PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential Extension INSPIRATION: The site is located in a area with the same architectural footprint. The extension proposal was to infuse a new layer of an intervention: something so radically opposite from the existing fabric of the space, reason being, the nuance of the new addition gives it a striking difference from the actual site which emphatically preserves the architectural identity of the existing layer depleting it and adds a new layer of architectural identity with its own powerful language with an added value. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This Project is an extension to a Residential Bungalow. The structure is designed considering sun path calculations leading to angled windows bringing in diffused light without sunglare. The idea is to add a new layer of an intervention, so radically opposite, the nuance of the which gives it a striking difference adding a new layer of identity. This idea stems from the belief that architecture, like poetry or history should be able to make its unique mark. Thus the name Symbiotic Parasite. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: While making the structure, because of its striking language there was an initial scepticism from the community. Once the structure was made it has become a favourite among its neighbours. The beauty of the structure also lies in its extreme versatality and is now converted into a nursery for their young child. Birds can often be seen perching on it and baby monkeys are found sliding on the structure with much vigour. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The structure is made with laser-cut M.S plates with insulation to battle the heat. The geometry of the design makes the whole structure self-supported. The lightness of the structure and the self- supporting attribute made it easy to add it to the original structure without much intervention to the structure and also makes it easy to detach and transport as an entity, essentially making it permanent as well as mobile. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The structure is tessellated considering sun path calculations leading to angled windows that bring in maximum diffused light without sun-glare. Thus arranged windows prevent the sun-glare and form an interesting pattern by the sun shadows on the floor of the internal space.The openable windows are placed to bring in maximum cool air and ventilation through different seasons. The geometric alignment of the structure also gives a visual feel of the space being much larger than its footprint. TAGS: Parametrics, Tesellation, Architecture, Regenration, InteriorDesign, Constructivism RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research and inspiration for this project was taken from constructivist paintings of Wassily Kandinsky and set designs of Lyubov Popova. A very strong influence of these design lines can be seen in the architects work on the project. The project also relies heavily on climate calculations and Sun Directions to find the perfect space design for its clients with providing maximum functional and aesthetic design solutions. CHALLENGE: The main concerns while designing the area where to provide a space which allowed maximum sunlight in without direct glare or heat. The facets of the structure are calibrated in accordance with the movement of sunlight in a way that the space always gets diffused sunlight at lower angles. Hence the space always gets ample amount of sunlight without glaring sun-rays. The space was designed to be able to change with flexible functions and is now converted into a nursery.
