| DESIGN NAME: Lalaboom Educational Beads PRIMARY FUNCTION: Preschool Toy INSPIRATION: While most of baby products have a short life cycle, we wanted to offer a verstile product able to follow child's development. Each beads has an organic shape, vivid color and specific texture to recall nature diversity. We were looking for offering a solution to plastic waste by making an item with purpose using universal shapes and functions. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Lalaboom educational beads is the first stylish toy who follow the children learning curve. It is intended for kids from 10 months up to 36 months and plus. It has 5 functions and each one corresponds to a stage of child's development using essential skills. pop it! twist it! mix it! stack it! lace it! Each function is discovered through manipulation. 10 colors x 11 textures x 11 organic shapes, Lalaboom alows children to play in style and create endless number of combinations and construction. It also share several principles as the Montessori teaching method based on learning through experimentation, hand manipulation and openplay. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This item concentrate several classic toy function into 1 single product. Each function have essential play value (connection, eyes-hand coordination, motor skills stimulation, lacing function and construction). PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project started in early 2017 in Hong Kong and was exhibited in October 2017 in Hong Kong. Official announcement during Nuremberg toy fair Feb 2018. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The challenge was to create an item that comply with toy standards (regulations on size, structures, small parts) using a soft material to avoid sharp points or skin scratches and to find the right tuning to keep a perfectly smooth mechanical attributes (screwing system, easy pop up connection, inner connection system). We choose HDPE as it bring softness, durability and it is PVC and BPA free. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: A single bead is diameter 4.5 cm x 8 cm. Chunky pieces calculated to fit children hands. TAGS: Openplay, toy, educational , Montessori, preschool, toddler, evolutive toy RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In order to bring Lalaboom to life we conducted both quantitative & qualitative research. We have studied the preschool toy market to identify the most relevant play value in preschool category in order to concentrate it into 1 single item. Market research on product, functions and prices has been made mainly in Europe and north America markets. We also conducted researches on material, textures used in preschool and nursery toys categories. Reasearch were done via shop visit, sample study, interview with educational profesional and toy professionals. CHALLENGE: The challenge was to bring a maximum of essential play value but to keep the item simple and attractive. Our motto is a sentence from Leonardo da Vinci: The ultimate sophistication is simplicity. We have tried to stick on this idea. All the product feature are easy to be discovered by children through basic manipulations. Also special attention has been given to find the right strength to assemble beads (not to loose not to tight) as we found that many item on the market was not possible to be assembled by young kids.
