DESIGN NAME: Step House
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Resort Villa
INSPIRATION: The project is located in Vinh Phuc and distances from Hanoi one hour by car, surrounded by lakes and trees. Client hoped he would spend in weekend with family and friends here with clean air.
In spite of the subtropical climate in Northern of Vietnam, most Vietnamese house and building does not have suitable ventilation and consideration for strong solar radiation.
We tried to make a building that satisfy client's requirement and suitable with climate here.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project has aimed at suitable house building in a hot and humid area.
We used traditional wooden work roof and door system for keeping well ventilation and prevention of solar radiation.
Each floor is slipped and made balcony at south east side. Then upper floor is turned into eaves for lower floor at north west side and prevents the raise of the temperature of this RC structure.
Floor in each level has garden expanded toward the beautiful lake nearby.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The first floor is common space for family and guest. It's open to the environment to better ventilation and connect human with nature.
The second floor is for guests. The sliding doors divide between rooms and rooms with corridor. They will be closed by night for privacy and open by day for human interactive and to connect people with the scenery.
The third floor is used by the owner of the villa. But we opened to the outside landscape so they can enjoy in their own room.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This site is the developed land for resort faced to Vac Lake on east side, and faced to road on both south and east side.
We place full-open door and balcony in 1-3rd floor at south and east side for getting the window through on the lake and view to the lake. And we place the original block material at south west side for keeping privacy and exhaust from south east.
For preventing the temperature rise, we analyzed some option of plan and calculate the optimum solution for it.
The roof is wooden sloped by ceramic roof tile with elevation exhaust window on top. This exhaust window is expected to have the ventilation effect from 2nd and 3rd floor to top. We discussed about the structure of this roof with Vietnamese carpenter often and decided the design for it.
We use modern method like as computer analyzation. On the other hand, I am trying to keep Vietnamese traditional technology and technic is available for Vietnamese climate and culture.
CHALLENGE: During the process of designing, we did not meet any obstacles. But in reality of construction, we had challenges in cooperation with construction contractors. We had disagreements in construction method and quality. In additional, the distance between site and company office made it harder to check the work frequently. To overcomes the obstacles, we had to send one of our member in designing team to stayed at the site and supervise the quality all the times of construction.
