DESIGN NAME: Versatile Decadence
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Outhouse Interiors
INSPIRATION: This project was conceptualized while a train journey deriving its versatility from transportation design being avant-garde and nuanced like contemporary transportation while still being utilitarian and multipurpose.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project is a regeneration of a dilapidated outhouse. The fluid and stoic landscape made an interesting micro-context. The curves and the metallic paint finish of the multipurpose cabinet create a directionality and calmness to its dynamism. The amorphous curves are designed fit its functions, Media centre curving towards the sitting area. The curved steps ascent into the striking red pool, whose ceiling, made from the broken older facade reflects the water. Each detail of the space is designed with utmost functionality without compromising on the luxury of design justifying its name.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The outhouse has a formal entertainment area flowing into an informal area. The cabinet which is a multi-purpose space includes HVAC, Automation, Pantry, Storage and Media Centre. The curves create accessibility and high functionality. The pantry is anthropometrically designed with access to the formal and informal area. The informal space has a jacuzzi, splash pool, restrooms and a steam room. The curved, increasing size of step's ascent into the red pool seamlessly connects the waterbodies.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project Duration: 7 months
Location: Ahmedabad
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The hinges in the doors of the entertainment area are custom designed to facilitate a hydraulic hinge for a compound curve surface. The fluidity of the surface and the metal finish of the cabinet responds to the immediate context. The curves create a directionality in the space leading the users to the informal space. The ceiling of informal area is custom designed from the older facade panels of the existing structure paying homage and the shards of glass reflect light waves in the water.

Researched materials and products used in this design were:
The hinges custom designed for the entertainment area to fit on a compound curve.
The false ceiling created with shattered glass from the old door of the facade of the old structure.
The compound curves of the cabinet and various anthropometric calculations done to make sure that each of these curves optimise the use of the space.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This project was conceptualised while a train journey deriving its versatility from transportation design being avant-garde and nuanced like contemporary transportation while still being utilitarian and multipurpose. The computationally designed compound curves facilitate multiple purposes and the materials used in the project are all considered after careful research into regeneration and reuse. Materials for the red pool and path are simple materials used in unique ways to give a sense of luxury.
CHALLENGE: This design is executed in a small town in India with limited technical knowhow. In these circumstances executing the cabinet with compound curves and multiple functions with great precision was a challenge that we overcame at a great budget. Convincing the clients for the selection of the colour of the pool was also a very hard exercise with now in-turn is their favourite place to hangout at. The false ceiling's calculations of the on an existing dilapidated structure was also very complex.
