| DESIGN NAME: Origami PRIMARY FUNCTION: Kinetic table INSPIRATION: ORIGAMI is an expandable table that is inspired by the ancient oriental technique of folding the paper called "Origami" evoking, in its design, the folded surfaces of the paper: the theme of origami occurs in the design of the table top and in the design of the polygonal base. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: ORIGAMI is a mechanically expandable table. Its square plane extends mechanically increasing the useful dimensions through the deployment of four lateral wings folded below the plane . This deployment takes place through a 90-degree rotation of the table top with respect to its base of support. The table idea is born to create a functional and completely automated design object, whose opening and closing is highly scenographic: the authomatic rotation of the top is triggered by a electromechanical linear actuator hidden under the top. Four metal rigid rods are connected to the rotating plate and to the four wings of the table. The rigid rods move in synchronous pushing the wings of the table outwards, thus spreading out to the plane. The rods are fixed to the rotating plate and to the four side wings with hinges with two degrees of freedom that allow greater stability during the opening phase. The foot of the table is of a pyramidal trunk shape with an irregular octagonal upper base and a square bottom. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Origamitable is an expandable table that combines aesthetic and functional aspects: it is able to double the support surface and accommodate many more guests or halve its dimensions to safeguard the spaces. The automatic table opening is very scenic and represents the innovative point of the project, together with the attention to design details PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The prototype development started in September 2016 in Apulia and was exhibited in Salone del Mobile in April 2017, in Apulia Crossing Identities Exhibition, as one of the best Design Product in Apulia FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The table can be made in wood, with various essences or details, but it is also possible to combine different materials: wood, plastic, metal, glass, stone and marble etc ... The table top and the foot have an engraving decoration that reproduces a triangular tessellation of the surface to reproduce the effect of folding the paper on the origami model SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The dimensions of the table are variable. the top is 1.20 X1.20 mt when closed and 2.4 X 2.4 when opens it's wings.
