| DESIGN NAME: Pilo Mini PRIMARY FUNCTION: Music Pillow INSPIRATION: When night falls, it's always a big project for many parents to put their kids to bed: children are not satisfied by hearing the same stories day by day. We know that sound can play a very important role to help people to sleep better. Sound can convey emotions, and rhythm can affect mood and mind. So we decided to design a pillow for children, which is different from any other pillows in this world, one can truly help children and parents with unique design and the magic power of music. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Pilo Mini redefines pillows in terms of shape and function. Based on children ergonomics data, the low-poly structure outlines a suitable curve follows the contours of head, neck and shoulder. The most graceful feature is its built-in sound units. They are invisible and imperceptible. They work without external power source and create a gently whispering sound field, which is acoustically balanced. Kids and parents can use Pilo Mini to enjoy bedtime story or music via any player with audio interface. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Pilo Mini has 32 surfaces and 2 heights, children can choose their best spots according to the sleep position. Pilo Mini has an audio input cable and does not need to charge. Parents can play music on it using any device with an audio output connector, such as cellphones, iPod, tablets, etc. The loudspeakers inside make sure that children can hear music of high quality while sleeping on it. Children and their parents can enjoy their bedtime hearing stories and music with the help of Pilo Mini. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in the middle of 2017 in Shenzhen, China. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Pilo Mini is codesigned by biomedical enigneers and industrial designers. It provides appropriate supporting height and pressure-relieving angle. The low-poly curve design is based on anthropometry and ergonomics data, and implemented with open-cell memory foam. The pillowcase is made of special cotton fabric, which ensures an comfortable feeling for sensitive children skin. The loudspeakers need to be imperceptible, so a special type of soft silicone cover is designed and implanted in Pilo Mini to protect them. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 480 mm x Depth 300 mm x Height 80 mm TAGS: Pillow for kids, low poly, sleep, music RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We want to design a pillow which fits sleeping gestures and slumber patterns of growing children, and meanwhile presents a unique style of low-poly design. Luckily, we got help from a biomedical engineering laboratory from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. They provided us with anthropometry and ergonomics statistical data of children head, neck and shoulder. We emerged these key points height with memory foam material, and implemented our design successfully at last. CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge is to creat a gently whispering sound field in the pillow, and make the sound of high quality. In the meantime, since the sound units are embedded in the pillow and chillden skin is very sensitive, we need to keep them invisible and absolutely imperceptible. A professional audio studio helps us to customize the sound units and adjust the sound field. Special silicon covers are implanted to protect the loudspeakers. Finally we make it more amazing than we expected.
