DESIGN NAME: Hongo
PRIMARY FUNCTION: City office branch
INSPIRATION: Construction sites are quiet mountain villages, Hongo.
It was moved by Hongo's beautiful mountains and traditional cityscapes.
I thought that I would like to induce further interaction among residents peculiar to the countryside in Japan.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This building serves as a new base for regional administration and residents' activities.
Environment, history, culture, technology.
We asked for a new design born by resonance with the hierarchical local context and set three themes.
1. It becomes a symbolic presence while incorporating the features of the cityscape as landscape elements
2. Induce interaction between residents
3. Expand the possibilities of traditional wooden buildings
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This mixed use project is composed of office and public facilities. The site is located in a calm, quiet historical mountain village, Hongo, where traditional gabled buildings still remain.
This symbolic project in the town centre has a calm demeanour but is an ambitious scheme that blends tastefully into its quiet mountain setting.
The design was developed through resonance with the layered local context linking regional history, contemporary society and the promise of a bright future.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project began in August 2011 and the design was completed in June 2012. Construction started in Iwakuni Hongo in November 2012, and it was completed in March 2014.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The simple plan is based on a strong axis between the existing facilities and new building; providing easy access for the residents and a clear relationship to the existing. A new roof creates a range of gabled roofs with existing. The extremely large structural span of the traditional timber frame gives an efficient, beautiful structural rhythm to the ceiling.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: building area:913.90 m2
total flor area:835.25 m2
structure:wooden
TAGS: City hall branches, community facilities, traditional, wooden buildings, harmony with the surroundings, good relations with the residents
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The use of "local wood" and "use of local carpenter technology" was a very important theme.
Because Hongo has been engaged in forestry, I thought that wooden construction is appropriate for Hongo public building.
The goal is to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions in production and logistics, such as minimizing the distribution route without processing the material, and so on.
I realized it with the cooperation of many people and got several opportunities to announce in the public place.
CHALLENGE: In Hongo there was a branch office that has been familiar to residents for a long time. It is an architecturally interesting building. In order to inherit the promise from the branch office to the regional history, contemporary society, and a bright future, we tried to resonate with the layered local context.
