RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Visual research on an art deco style was conducted at the local university library. A primary resource were the eight books in the International Deco series of inspirational reference books by Louise Fili and Steven Heller. The specimens in the books come from Italy, Spain, the UK, Germany, France, and the Netherlands, primarily between WWI and WWII. The designer poured over images of posters, packaging, advertisements, menus, and brochures displaying the elegant geometry and harmonious marriage of typography and illustration that make deco a popular style to this day.
CHALLENGE: Together with the client, we positioned the event as a fun way to spend an evening and give to charity at the same time. For the tenth anniversary, the hosting organization wanted to elevate the sophistication of their annual event. The art deco style effectively set expectations for the guests.
