| DESIGN NAME: Mykonos White Boxes Resort PRIMARY FUNCTION: Tourist Complex INSPIRATION: The dialogue between the proposal and the natural landscape of the area, as well as with the living memory of the tradition, outline the main design principles. This dual approach indicates, on a second reading, and its semantic starting point. In general, the architectural approach is not tempted by the idea of imitation as from the very beginning aimed at challenging the notion of dialectical contemporary, bypassing the traditional and ephemeral. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design proposes a dialectic relationship with the attributes found in this particular place. Situated along multiple successive levels, the modules of the rooms are reminiscent of drystone walls, while the repetitive motifs remind of a traditional Cycladic dovecote. The public spaces are located on the lower level, in a single tiered building facing the sea. As it expands towards the shoreline, the oblong swimming pool and the main outdoor area unfold and seem to reach for the horizon. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: - SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The total resort area is 44,000 m2. TAGS: Architecture, Mykonos, Resort, Tourism, Hotel, Cyclades, Greece, Pool, View, Sea RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The regularity of the design in general is overturned by the semi-outdoor spaces of the main building and the rooms, as they are formed by perforated organically shaped horizontal and vertical surfaces that interact with the natural light. These seemingly random geometries create a sense of movement, in conjunction with the rearrangement of the modules and also the displacement of the voids in-between. Although the program and functions of the building are in accordance with a distinct geometric system a powerful sense of flow and variability of the form is also present. CHALLENGE: The approach is not tempted by the idea of imitation as from the very beginning aimed at challenging the notion of dialectical contemporary, bypassing the traditional and ephemeral. In the words of Ioannis Theodorakopoulos, from his essay Introduction to Plato: The role of dialectics is to lead us from the numerous and well-known to the concise and unknown. In order for the ambient atmosphere of the place to be reflected on the synthesis in a contemporary manner, a terminology filled with multiple experiential implications was adopted, that deals with the concept of the building-event. Whilst occupied with its assigned projects, the studio often seeks to participate in architectural competitions which give the opportunity for innovative approaches by posing research challenges. Thus, there is interaction between experiment and practice in the design process, which constantly contributes new ideas to the production of built works. Potiropoulos+Partners has repeatedly been awarded in competitions and has received many distinctions whilst many of its buildings are the result of these awards. In 2015, the firm was nominated for the Mies Van der Rohe Awards - European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture. The studio’s oeuvre has been presented in national and international architectural exhibitions, and numerous of its projects have been published in the architectural and general press. In 2009, the monograph “Potiropoulos D+L Architects” was published by Potamos Editions including a prologue by Daniel Libeskind and an introduction from Prof. Dimitris Philippides. In 2014 Potiropoulos D+L Architects was included by Panayotis Tsakopoulos among the eighteen architects and architectural studios presented in his book "Reflections on Greek Postwar Architecture", a selection based on “the unique signature that they have added to greek postwar architecture, their participation in the dominant trends of the period and their subsequent divergence – or not – from those trends” |
