| DESIGN NAME: Casa de la Flora PRIMARY FUNCTION: Hotel INSPIRATION: Vaslab’s metaphorical design takes on the act of ‘arising flora’, where each concrete versus wood villa reflects as a flora form, emerges from the ground, and blooms to reach the daylight. Deviated walls and tilted roofs are characterized throughout the series of 36 cubic-form villas, where these tapered elements do not only recall the act of arising flora but they widen the rooms’ perspective frames when looking outward to the sea. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Casa de La Flora, the Design Hotels member in Thailand, is the 36 cube-shaped pool villa resort located in Khao Lak, Phangnga. Designed by Vaslab Architecture, this beachfront resort was aimed to revive Khao Lak community after Tsunami in 2004 and to serve as a new high profile but yet humble destination hotel. Facilities include reception lounge, swimming pool, pool bar, beachfront restaurant, spa, fitness, and library. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: - PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was designed in 2008 and the construction was completed in 2011. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Eco-friendly credentials come in the use of local materials, the form of an ozone (low-chemical) purification system for the swimming pools and waste-water and rain water recycling. NAME: Vaslab Architecture PROFILE: Vaslab Architecture is a design oriented firm based in Bangkok, presenting expertise in architecture, interior design, and urban design. The studio creates an architecture by injecting the innovative and experimental ideas to construct the new order of architectural elements contextually, which has been recognized with the 2014 winner of International Architecture Award by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, the 2014 Iconic Awards by The German Design Council, and the 2009, 2013, and 2014 World Architecture Festival Awards (Finalists) as well as having participated as judges and speakers at the World Architecture Festival in Singapore in October 2012 and 2014.
