Xuzhou Suning Plaza
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Mixed-Use Retail
INSPIRATION:
Known as an "Imperial Emperor’s Town", Xuzhou is a historically prominent city with more than 5,000 years of history. We tried to find a link connecting this history with contemporary urban life. Produced in the late Zhou Dynasty the "Lucky Cloud" pattern has a historical connection with Xuzhou. The cloud is magical, the changing of the natural form that inspires reverie, the symbol of auspiciousness. In contemporary interpretations a cloud is a parable for the wild and chaotic urban life.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Located in the prosperous business district of Xuzhou, Xuzhou Suning Plaza is expected to be a key instrumental project for the future development of the city. The project creates a symbol of "Lucky Cloud" pattern by locating five towers in different orientations over a circular podium, floating and embracing altogether like a dynamic cloud. The different orientations provide the towers with good sunshine and helps avoid cross views while giving each tower has great views of Xuzhou.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The "Lucky Cloud" pattern was produced in the late Zhou Dynasty and its popularity reached a peak during the Qin and Han Dynasties. The pattern development has some historical connection with Xuzhou. The cloud is magical and delightful; the changing of the natural form is charming and inspires reverie. In this ancient view, the cloud is the symbol of auspiciousness, marking the holy days of creation. In contemporary interpretations a cloud is a parable for the wild and chaotic urban life.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Curtain wall and aluminum panels used for sustainable considerations. The area of glass curtains are strictly calculated and controlled to reduce solar heating. Aedas designed bespoke integrated natural lighting and ventilation system for this project. Aluminum panels create rings around the building giving it a flowing motion.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Xuzhou Suning Plaza is a multi-use commercial complex. The total GFA is 481908.8㎡. Tower A, is 266m, with three different zones. Lower zone: class A office, middle zone: Soho office, higher zone: 5 star hotel with a GFA of 103,469㎡. The other four towers are 105.7m high and host apartments and office, with a total GFA of 135,100㎡. The podium is a shopping mall that extends to B1 and links to the metro station with a GFA of 12,231㎡. Two levels of parking extend underground.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
In a place noted for its rich cultural history and increasingly adventurous cityscape, it only makes sense that this important addition to the urban-scape could refer the elegance of the local culture, and at the same time celebrate the excitement of the contemporary. This conceptual challenge is often faced by many architects working in China today.
CHALLENGE:
The project design is highly versatile in the combination of spaces and functions and enhances the city by offering a public plaza within, as well as becoming a visual icon for the city.
