PRIMARY FUNCTION: Hotel
INSPIRATION: As hotels embodies commercial qualities, but also a temporary dwelling for hotel guests, therefore, we did away with superfluous decorative elements, instead we strived for spatial forms that are practical and experiential. At the same time, as Shenzhen being a city of design, the local up-and-coming artists naturally need a stage to exhibit their works,so webring arts and culture into this luxury hotel so that the hotel guests not just having an enjoyable resting stop for their bodies.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: As we place great premium in having implanted local cultural nutrients into our hotel interior design, so we worked to deepen our understanding of local culture, history and materials, etc., in the articulation of our design styling.
As this project is adjacent to Shenzhen Bay Sports Center without much cultural ambiance, so we opened up a bookshop-like reading gallery in the lobby for facilitating a relaxing place for reading and buying books for hotel guests and the local general public.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: In terms of guest room design, in order to give the staying guests the ultimate comfortable and relaxing experiences in petit but exquisite space, we designated 3 zones in our layout planning: the functional wardrobe and bathroom, are designed with openness to interaction, much like living room would be, and areas such as sleeping area and bath tub area which require privacy, plus the lounge-like window-alcove area, not only satisfy all possible needs within the guest rooms, however, with its openness unaffected by its functional demarcations.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The overall design concept of this hotel is to fuse arts and literature into the hotel space, which is not just service to the hotel guests, but also seeks to contribute to the cultural welfare of the local, while making its own unique contribution to Shenzhen. As we plan to articulate the hotel lobby as an art gallery, we recommended to our client to shape the hotel as a platform for artistic exchange, which shall be cultivated with exhibition curating thinking and methodology in assembling modern multimedia arts and literatures in lobbies and multi-function conference rooms. In terms of guest room design, we shift back to the basic sensual experiences of our guests, with inter-connected functional areas within the guest room in a contemporary living setting.
CHALLENGE: In order to constantly exhibit diversified artistic works, having to first convinced our client to leave blank space on the lobby wall, in itself, is a major challenge; Furthermore, we opted to use the then rarely used G.R.G. fiberglass plasterboard as wall-cladding material so as to create the visual effect of seeming masonry texture in a pure white surface, hence it took a while to find a suitable collaborator for the assembly of this particular work.
