DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Zi Ran

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
A Table

INSPIRATION:
Living, like a plant, is something spontaneous. In Chinese, the word for nature is Zi Ran, which means that which happens of itself, not under any control of an outside force. If you stop this spontaneous flowering of nature, it would be ridiculous. I want to use the concept of Zi Ran to be the inspiration for my table. In order to show case the idea of everything happens spontaneously, I decide to research and utilize some of the old Chinese wood working technique.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
I designed and made my table without using any nails, screws or glue. I used poplar to make my table, becasue it was often used in Asian furniture building. And also I love the light wooden color of poplar, with a hint of green. It can be used as a dining table or a desk. Because of the simplicity of its design, I want it to have multiple functions. This table can be put together without using any screw, nails or glue. And each part of the table is removable. The whole table is flat packable.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The table is steady and durable, but also flat packable, and can be assembled by a single person without using any tools and hardwares. The component contains 8 pieces, all in the same material and finish. With no heavy chemical finish and sharp edges, The design is modern, eco-friendly and child safe. So you can enjoy, living, gather with the whole family.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in February 2016 in Los Angeles, and finished in November 2016 in Los Angeles.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Furniture, Decorative Items and Homeware Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
This is a hardgoods project using poplar as the main material. The production process is waste-free and 100% by hands, by utilizing traditional Chinese mortise and tenon, which is both the technology and story of this project.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The dimension of the table is 30 inches in Height, 39 inches in Width and 69 inches in Length.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
We think we have a drive to survive, that we must go on living. But you see, living, like a plant, is something spontaneous. In Chinese, the word for nature is Zi Ran, which means that which happens of itself, not under any control of an outside force. If you stop this spontaneous flowering of nature, if you tell it that you must do it. It is like saying to someone that you must love me. It is ridiculous. In order to show case the idea of everything happens spontaneously, I decide to research and utilize some of the old Chinese wood working technique. I designed and made my table without using any nails, screws or glue.

CHALLENGE:
The right material is key. I want the table to be a long-lasting, accessible and meaningful statement piece for a modern household. So I need to use something hard and sturdy, but also lightweight and unique. After all the tryouts and prototypes, poplar became the best choice for me. Because poplar, as the softest hardwood, is light and has the freshest veins, which looks crisp, clean and fashion-forward. And it is often used in oriental furniture and architecture design.
