| DESIGN NAME: SSS Litter Bin PRIMARY FUNCTION: Outdoor Trash Classification INSPIRATION: How to use design to change the dirty images of sanitation facilities, turning the ordinary and the functional into a quality design or even a 'luxury' piece, by purifying the information and reducing the details to earn a respect from the users back to the sanitation workers and themselves. However design is not the single solution but to provide a better hardware to the systematic management, perhaps a smart one. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A modest unification with bold contrast of maximised functionality and capacity to minimised material and finish, i.e. largest opening for dropping trashes from two sides, painted interior with two vivid colours to indicate recyclable and the others, both user friendly for pedestrians and cyclists. Additionally, the upward design ashtray collector, offer better social smoking stations under Shanghai's restricted indoor banned smoking policy. Optimised conductors also simplified maintenance works. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The sanitation workers felt happier when maintaining the new bins, since less labor is required to keep all corners clean. One shop owner sent a drink gift to the designer at inspection, because the colours told her immediately where to drop the trashes, instead of reading carefully in different languages etc. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project took part of the Urban Design Festival 2017 Shanghai, replacing firstly 20 existing bins on Yuyuan Road, between Dingxi Road and Jiangsu Road, more info click http://www.nnndf.org |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Full body welding of 304 stainless steel with fine brush finishes. Metallic baking paint and silk printed signs.
