DESIGN NAME:
House IM box shaped flexible residence

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Single house

INSPIRATION:
I don’t know what lies ahead, but for now I’d like to be surrounded by my beautiful collection. The client had two specific requests: he wanted a house that had a gallery space and the flexibility that would enable him to accommodate diverse changes in daily life. Thus, we wanted to create a residence that could achieve these functions in a high grade manner but also at low cost.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The house, built as a conventional wooden construction on a flat stage like foundation, is structurally supported by the outer walls and columns for the courtyard. This enables the client to redesign the large one room space quite easily if he wishes to do so in future to suit his life stage as a gallery, as individual rooms, or necessary space for raising children.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The interior of the building is divided by a 1.9m high blindfold wall and furniture. The spaces are gently connected to each other without complete separation, so that it is basically a one-room space of about 100 m2. By slanting all the roofs and ceilings down towards the courtyard, the view beyond the high windows running around the building blends into the sky.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in Jan. 2011 and finished in Dec. 2012 in Takasaki city Gunma Japan.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Architecture, Building and Structure Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
On this project we designed all furnitures, all storage, kitchen set, dining table, stool, by our original design. And also we designed originaly a spcial stainless steel lighting equipment and continuous windows at the top of the wall and big sized wooden opening for the courtyard. Because we needed to keep pureness of our design for the space of House IM.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
House IM is a 4m high 10 by 10m box shape, sitting on a flat reinforced concrete foundation rising 50cm above the ground with a 1m overhang around the perimeter. The exterior wall was given a mottled finish in a cloud motif and high windows were installed all around the building to bring the house closer to nature. The expand metal ramp provides access to the residence, floating up to the entrance.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The client had two requests a beautiness and super flexiblity. For this request, we answered by using the stage foundation and new wooden structure. This enables the client to redesign the large one-room space quite easily. And of course this house has very simple beatiful interior and distinctive mottled finish exterior. House IM is my projection of a long-lasting residence where the client can enjoy his everyday life.

CHALLENGE:
It was pretty hard to realise our purpuse that is making a highly safety structure with keeping the redesignable floor planning. We had to also built with special low cost same time. At first, we let the house built on a flat stage like foundation, is structurally supported by the outer walls and columns for the courtyard. Next we developed the new system of removal column and inside 1.9 m hight wall. And we could realise House IM as a box shaped flexible residence.

PROFILE:
It is easy to become immersed in preconceived ideas called "common sense" and "experience". But these can at times hinder the creation of truly natural and comfortable spaces. It is therefore essential to keep an open mind. Pure design work is a process that involves identifying what is truly needed, and placing the necessary quantities in the necessary places. Architecture, whether it be a small house for a single family, is the accumulation of this fundamental work process, outweighing all elements of purpose, scale, method of construction, or structure. This is the very essence of our design.
