| DESIGN NAME: Riverway Residence PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential house INSPIRATION: Architect designed a bungalow for themselves in which function and efficiency take priority without the addition of any frills. Its design makes subtle references to vernacular architecture, interpreted with contemporary technology. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The facade has a pleasing geometry which combines brick and textured stone. At the centre of the house is the traditional courtyard which draws attention at the wooden jaalis. The cantilevered ledges at the windows provide informal seating recalling the jharokas. Adjacent to the kitchen is the cantilevered staircase with wooden treads and suspended ropes. There is a glass walkway supported by wooden members traverses the central portion of the house which has been left transparent. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The house is built with the minimalist approach collaging the traditional space making vastu complaint with the contemporary aesthetics. As depicted in the plan the central space which is the Brahmasthan and open to sky divides the space on the ground floor. (Derived from the traditional courtyard). This results in overlapping of spaces by utilization of minimum walls. In addition these spaces seems bigger despite of small plinth area. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The concept of minimalist is taken forward by utilization of two basic materials i.e. wood and indian stones in the interiors. Here the beige color acts as a background against the key element made with the liberal use of wood and indian stones. the focus was to keep simple building and add color through furniture and decor i.e the sofa, cushions, upholstery, etc. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Site area is 371.60 square meter and built-up area is 278.7 square meter. TAGS: Contemporary, Central Courtyard, Glass Bridge, Pergolas, Minimalist, Vastu Complaint, Traditional Elements. RESEARCH ABSTRACT: - CHALLENGE: The creative challenge was to make house Vastu complaint incorporating various elements like central Brahmasthan with contemporary sensibilities.
