DESIGN NAME: Muqarnas
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Acoustic Lighting Panel
INSPIRATION: The starting point of the design is modular geometry. The main goal is to enable designer or user to be able to add modules together to make infinite number of combinations. Another factor in the emergence of this design is the necessity of sustainable and economical building systems for the spaces that need both voice control and illumination.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Muqarnas is a modular acoustic panel system that can be used as a lighting element. Conference rooms, theaters and such spaces that must be arranged acoustically also need to be designed as decorative and functional. With this design, there is no need to make separate expenses for acoustic regulation and lighting. In addition, three times more performance and illuminated surfaces are achieved as compared to ordinary acoustic panels. Thanks to its sub-construction, the modules can be arranged modularly in the desired composite.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: In order for the design to be applied to a surface, mounting profiles are first fixed at regular intervals to the wall surface. Standard insulation materials could be placed between these profiles to enhance acoustic performance. Lighting devices and cables are placed in the holes in the profiles. Once the electrical installation is complete, the modular with 3-dimensional geometric form is attached to the surface in any desired combination. The surfaces of the modules are covered with fabric. That way, the modules that can be inserted and removed repeatedly upon request are both light passable and voice absorptive.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This design was projected in 2012 in Turkey. Design patented by Turkish Patent and Trademark Office with Patent no: 2012/12205. The prototypes were made in September of 2017 in Turkey.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: All elements that constitute the design can be produced using existing molded systems. The invention is compatible with the materials (sound and thermal insulation materials) and tools (screws, anchors, sockets, cables, bulbs etc.) likely to be used. Thus, no special methods or techniques are required in the systems production or application. The invention may be used in a variety of indoor spaces, from nightclubs to offices, which require acoustic treatments and aesthetically pleasing design. The design may be applied in an economical and aesthetic way anywhere sound and thermal insulation and lighting enhancement are required.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The design will be packaged unassembled in a flat box. Dimensions of the modules are approximately 30 x 30 x 8 centimeters in accordance with international transport standards. Thanks to the layout in the box, there is no stacking limit. Accordingly; manufacturers and sellers do not have to reflect transport, storage or installation costs to users.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In todays world, sound-absorbing panels are widely deployed in that regard. However, simple provision of acoustic treatment is insufficient for the above-mentioned indoor spaces. It is also necessary to illuminate these spaces in decorative and functional ways. Thus, as designers arrange for the acoustic treatment of walls, they are compelled to allocate some areas of the wall for lighting elements whose acoustic properties are not controlled.
CHALLENGE: Existing indoor sound-absorbing elements fail to meet the aesthetic requirements of designers in applications where design aesthetics are important and special acoustic treatments are required, such as conference halls, cinemas, theaters, offices and so on. In addition, such indoor spaces need to be illuminated in a controlled way, both for decorative purposes and to meet specific needs. The design offers one aesthetically pleasing and economical system that provides both acoustic treatment and functional and decorative lighting.
