DESIGN NAME:
Mu Dan

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Poetry drawing

INSPIRATION:
When Nan Zhou began to read Mu Dan poetry seriously it gave him a very special feeling and influenced both his drawings and emotions. He found the shadow of loneliness and cold hiding inside of the poem. Once he saw the sentence that has been changed on the original copy of his manuscript saying: Life is a harsh winter, it gave him a moment of deep silence. He was brought back to his youth by Mu Dan poetry.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Mu Dan poetry suddenly came into Nan Zhou life in 2016 and became very close to his own creative work as an artist. It took about two months to draw more than 30 paintings. While working on Mu Dan's poetry he got to know the founder of FANCL, Mr. Chen Nian, and they have achieved a great and happy cooperation.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Two months after receiving the poem copyright, the series was launched on the VANCL official website. That day, despite no advertising, the launch became a hot topic amongst the literary youth. Second and the third editions were subsequently printed and released. VANCL became under the spotlight that summer with radio interviews, newspaper articles, internet broadcasts, and successful art exhibitions at Tsinghua and Peking Universities. At the same time VANCL received recognition by literary faculty scholars and poets, resulting in extensive social attention.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Wild Beast is Nan Zhou first painting. Mu Dan wrote it in 1937 as the first poem of the Mu Dan poetry book published by People s Literature in the new edition. He has been using bright colors and paint like a kid. When he reads a feeling, he would just draw it.

CHALLENGE:
It is a challenge to express the meaning of poetry through drawing. It took about two months to read the poems and paint them, finishing around thirty pictures. He started to draw in a complex and abstract way, and changed to a more simple minimal way. He wanted to finish the series of work with Meditation, but continued drawing up to Winter.

CLIENT/STUDIO/BRAND DETAILS
NAME:
VANCL 凡客

PROFILE:
VANCL was established in 2007 and is one of the earliest Internet bands. T-shirts are regarded as the main low price product. The main customer target is "literary youth”: middle school, college students, and office workers. In 2016, the Mu Dan series Chinese vernacular poetry design T-shirt became the best-selling product of the year. It is the first time in nearly 100 years that the best vernacular Chinese poet Mu Dan has received attention in the view of mass consumption. This caused an unexpected increase in search volume for these T-shirts, with search traffic increasing by multiples of tens of thousands. This is the first time that T-shirts have become a carrier of Chinese native culture in the form of art and gave rise to a huge burst of commercial energy. The descendants of Mu Dan were very impressed and took initiative to send a lot of e-mails. It is the first time that an artist seriously brought Mu Dan poetry to the mass audience through the general appearance of a picture. It was very challenging. But it seems that Nan Zhou did well. VANCL took big step straight to success, winning the heart of the "literary youth” customers. The popularity of Chinese native culture received a revival, demonstrating how art and design can influence massive public consumption.
