| DESIGN NAME: Octagon PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lighting INSPIRATION: Inspired by the mysterious philosophy of Bagua evolved from Tai Chi, Yin Yang, Wu Xing the space-time and relationship between matters and objects. From Tai Chi evolve Liang Yi, from Liang Yi, Si Xiang are evolved, Si Xiang inspire Bagua. Matching amongst themselves the 64 Gua symbolising the wonders of nature, man and matters are created. The structure, state of things and lines, derived from the evolution and change of tune from Bagua simulate an architectural product of nature. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The structure and the intersection of the horizontal and vertical wood block and metal buckle, a variable lined patterns is naturally knitted displaying the delicate relationship between points, lines and the surface. Through the process of handmaking and wood tenon, firm and solid, portraying the dual quality of boldness and softness. [Wu Xing] represents the five elements (metal, wood, water, fire, earth) which is heartily experienced through a balanced composition of the Octagon. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Octagon is constructed with a simple pulley mechanism and operated manually. User could observe different parts of the artwork at different angles, The weight of the lamp is balanced by water in the earthware, as a result they remain stationary. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in August 2017 in Hong Kong and finished in October 2017 in Hong Kong. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Fine Arts and Art Installation Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Mortise & Tenon joint is the key to construct the Octagon. Brass, iron, magnet, Teak wood and veneer, red thread, LED and clay are the material used for the production. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 1010mmm x 1020mm x 4000mm TAGS: lighting, interactive, user-experience, functional, handmade RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We are interested in Chinese philosophy and we had interview different people which showed us it will be great to have some functional and useable art piece can represent the philosophy. Also, we did research on "Bagua" and found that its meaningful and wish to make an art piece to show to the public. CHALLENGE: The accuracy of marking and crafting the mortise and tenon joint. A tiny mistake could cause failure of the entire artwork. Delicate handling of electrical wire and red thread through the lamp is required to ensure continuous electricity supply and avoid twisting of the wooden structure. Wood bending is another issue that consumes plenty of time and shaping details.
