DESIGN NAME: Iskilar
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Artists studio residence
INSPIRATION: The client, a terracotta artist, required a place which could efficiently combine his residence with his personal working-exhibition area to explore and display his passion for the art. Only brief given was “I don’t want a studio in my house, I want to live in a studio!” Inspired, the designer has come up with an intriguing edifice with the artist’s den in the forefront, his residence at rear of the site, ensuring the sanctity of both spaces. Designed with a minimalistic approach, clients’ amicable persona is reverberated through each space of the structure.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design breaks away from conventional parameters, attempts to connect the interior and exterior enabling the occupants to appreciate nature around. Simple lifestyle of the occupants is emphasised with neutral aesthetics in the choice of furniture and decoration styles in house. On contrary the Gallery Facade gives monumental scale to the project inducing curiosity in the mind of visitors. Though part of a harmonious combination of diverse spaces, each zone in building stands out with its own aura, boldly yet simply outlined through this design.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Project is designed to suit climatic conditions on site. To control the harsh light on south side, instead of large windows, glass bottles inserted in walls are used as natural light source. They are arranged in patterns of constellations. Fixed glass windows enhance light quality providing direct sunlight incidence in most of the area. Ventilation is achieved through louvers. Inbuilt seating and furniture is used to go beyond the conventional idea of formal living spaces. The lighting and the décor aptly reflects the requisite ambience of the soul of the house.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project started in September 2014 and finished in February 2016.
Project is located at Talegaon , a small town near Pune , India.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Earthen textures dominate the material pallet. Flooring is done with Indian Patented stone in different colors rendered with patterns of Terracotta beads and small lamps. Brick walls in rat trap bond with basic plaster serve as a canvas for the client’s art work. Forgoing the RCC slabs, designer opted for Filler slabs cast with concrete block fillers. Terracotta pots embedded in slab itself act as intriguing light fittings. Interesting light patterns are formed by wooden, steel & bamboo pergolas floating above the courts and terrace. Simple lifestyle of occupants is emphasized with neutral aesthetics in choice of furniture and decoration styles.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The site dimensions are is 23 M X 15.25 M with area 350.75 sq.m. Public, semi-public and private areas are segregated in 3 blocks, separated by courtyards acting as multi-activity spaces, linked by verandas. The first block houses the art gallery and rainwater harvesting tank below. Steps leading to the gallery are designed as amphitheater which also works as extended exhibition area. 2nd block includes living, kitchen and terrace. 3rd block comprises of 2 bedrooms on ground floor and a small work space plus a guest bedroom on first floor. The plan follows a grid module of 3030. Built up area of the project is 148 sq. m.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: After thoroughly surveying the conditions of site, including the history of the building, we worked closely with client to fully understand their needs, user patterns and to develop a detailed scope and program. Study was carried out in order to fully utilise the materials which was procured after demolishing the earlier building. To optimise the expenses various material choices were analysed and the best possible solutions were adopted. Experiments were carried out to fuse some technologies to achieve the desired character. E.g. rendering the IPS floor with terracotta beads etc.
CHALLENGE: The challenge here was to create a building which communicates with surrounding nature and maintain the vernacular character of old structure. Focusing on functionality and zoning, the designer has put great effort on spatial planning to optimize space efficiency. Transition from one space to another becomes exciting because of various levels in house. Economy being another major constraint is taken care of with conscious design decisions like using local material and material from the old structure etc.
