DESIGN NAME: Tipping Machine
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Belt Cutter
INSPIRATION: The inspiration came from the craft of belt making. Traditionally done by hand, the making of a leather belt takes many steps and utilizes several specialty hand tools. The design intent is to combine tasks where possible, and to streamline the production process of handmade leather belts by offering a simple to use and productive solution for belt makers.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This machine is designed to aid the manufacturing of leather belts in a small production setting, leathercraft studios, and school workshops. Combining tasks like taking measurements, marking positions, punching holes and cutting belt ends into one simple action. Its unique double measurement gauge and rear fence stop allows for precise cutting of buckle holes and strap ends and results in symmetrical, perfectly tipped belt strap every time. It is optimized to cut leather straps from 20mm to 55mm in width and up to 6mm in thickness.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The machine operation is simple, first insert the cutting die into the die mounting plate. Then place the leather strap onto the cutting board. Next, adjust the rear fence using the front knob and center the strap on the measurement gauges. Finally, pull the handle down completely to cut the strap. The result is perfectly tipped and punched belt strap ready for hardware application and finishes.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project started in March of 2016 and was completed in December 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Extensive use of steel both in sheet and cast form. Precision machined components allow the hand operated machine to out put over four tons of compression force to cut tough leather straps.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Physical dimension 310mm x 419mm x 741mm
Package dimension 500mm x 400mm x 500mm
Approximately 25kg package weight.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Our market research showed that there is one solution in the market with limited functionality. By studying production machinery, factory workers and the craft, we identified the fundamental features and design criteria. Four full scale working prototypes were created and tested extensively in the development process.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenges are the weight and its centering function. The machine will need to produce tons of forces in order to cut through leather. To generate that amount of pressure while keeping the machine portable is difficult. The other challenge is centering the holes and strap end on the belt without excessive components and set up. All calibration is done at the engineering level and new alignment gauge system is developed as the solution to this challenge.
