DESIGN NAME: Tongling Recluse
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Historic Building Renovation
INSPIRATION: Taoist culture “the three begets all things of the world” gave birth to the combined form. The appearance responded to the local culture, sustainable ecological concept and the combination of new and old. The curves were partly brought in the plan so as to separate an alienated imaginary space from the original projection profile. Combined with the extensive imaginary space, an alternating spatial curved surface was formed. The interlaced spaces enriched the design.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Tongling Recluse is originally a damaged mixed style dwelling. For the layout, we added a span in the west as well as the south-north. The traditional folding roof and a streamline combined into one, reflecting Taoist culture “the three generates everything”. The previous walls shaped the main space, which now are interior partitions. We marked original old bricks and rebuild the wall with them after finishing the new foundation. Thus, we responded to the local culture and eco-sustainability.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Under the conditions of limited space and time, a suspension bridge is required to be built on the site as means of material transportation between the two adjacent roads. This will enable the achievement the three-dimensional geometry of the roof, whilst maintaining the traditional building elements and components of the whole building with the use of steel fabrication.
Upon rebuilding the wall, the steel structure will be concealed with an external facade of tiles extracted from the original wall. (This method is common in the local maintenance of traditional buildings and the practice of saving brick materials.)
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Tongling recluse is located in Tongling city, Anhui province, China. It was built from late May of 2017 and finished in a period of 45 days, and then it began operating.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: -
CHALLENGE: There are 3 challenges to realize this project. First of all, the time for the construction is short, just 40 days. Secondly, the local manual technique is limited, which made some part of the design hard to achieve. Last but not least, the relationship between traditional culture and new culture is difficult to balance, since this is a renovation program. Accordingly, Tongling Recluse is not just a simple residential building, but an achievement combining new culture to the traditional one.
