DESIGN NAME: Uchi Soto no Uchi
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential House
INSPIRATION: Finding this site was a once-in-a-lifetime encounter, and I am constantly considering designs that draw from the local color, surrounding environment, and shape of the site. Further, if that proves not to be possible, then the connection with the land will become weaker, and it will lose the value of its existence. However, my biggest hope is that the completed building will bring happiness to the person that lives there.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This house was planned for a married couple in their 40s living in a quiet residential area in Chiba of Kanto region.
Three boxes were randomly stacked, and the resulting margins were included in the indoor area. It is like being outside, while actually being inside. The concept behind it is living in the same kind of spaciousness you would find in a park. In addition, some of the outdoor space is used to make up part of the living room, further blurring the lines between "inside" and "outside".
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: It is a private residence built in Chiba Prefecture of Japan. It was planned as a deformed place of a quiet residential area in Chiba Prefecture. It is used beautifully though it has been completed for a year.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Design period started in December 2015 and finished in May 2016. Construction period started in June 2016 and finished in December 2016. Location is Chiba, Japan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Because these residences will be lived in while left constantly open, the plan is to avoid using air conditioners as much as possible. Japan's Kanto region tends to have strings of extremely hot days, and abnormal weather is becoming an issue recently. The Kanto region is also one of the world's most densely populated regions, making it difficult for people to live there openly. The "open while closing" concept is an easier way to solve this problem.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Total floor area is 112.99 sqm. Building area is 112.99 sqm. Plot area is 285.54 sqm. Building scale: 1 storey.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: -
CHALLENGE: One portion of the large-scale development site in Chiba prefecture that exceeds 300 buildings runs alongside a curve even though nearly the whole of the rest of the site has been landscaped, giving it a unique shape that clearly differs from the rest. This is great for clients who don't like ordinary shapes, providing the possibility of leveraging the cut-out shape's characteristics to the maximum extent. Ordinarily, such an unusually shaped area is perceived as presenting great challenges, but the sense of accomplishment on conquering such adversities and creating intentional uniqueness is immeasurable.
