| DESIGN NAME: Scent of Music PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential Apartment INSPIRATION: Apartments with floor-to-ceiling windows in Taiwan deals with a tricky problem of western sun exposure, such as this case. To break apart the strong sunlight, I designed a wall between the living area and the dining area, the inspiration of the form comes from the piano keys along with the notes, on one hand, it stables the dining area, on the other hand, it also creates the rhythm of light. That’s the reason this project is named “Scent of light”. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: To connect the fragmented space in this duplex apartment, the designer used vertical circulation to soften the division, along with a tall-standing cuboid as the main wall, which penetrates through the first and second floor. The main wall is also used as a division between the living room and the dining area, adding an ensure feeling when dining, while the light shine through the engraved pattern on the wall, creating an interesting change between shadow and light. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Applying the classic gray-tone palette, the designer hopes to combine the modern style with low saturation colors. Also by leaving a large area of the space white, it creates a subtle feeling of order between the planes. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was finished in 2016 in Taichung, Taiwan. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: When designing a duplex apartment, the staircase is one of the most important features. In this project, we’ve tried to break through the form and structure, and transform it with the usage of composite material, making the staircase looks playful and light.
