DESIGN NAME: Furry Friends Farm 2018
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Calendar
INSPIRATION: Furry Friends Farm Malaysia was struggling to keep up with increased expenses as the farm received more abandoned dogs. To raise funds, we decided to design a calendar, a product that everyone uses. We wanted to show the world that these underdogs are unique, lovable and worthy companions, and highlight their expressions and individualities. We also wanted to showcase the farm’s animal-friendly environment with the animal pen design - a home for all animals where they are not kept in cages.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Furry Friends Farm 2018 Calendar is produced to raise funds for Furry Friends Farm Malaysia, a no-kill animal sanctuary. The calendar box set contains 13 loose cards and a do-it-yourself display stand. After folding and assembly, the display stand takes the shape of an animal pen. One side of the stand has a coin slot, making it a coin box. The other side of the stand displays the 13 loose sheets of the calendar. Each month of the calendar stars a rescued dog and tells its unique story.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The animal pen is folded and packed into the box as a flat piece and requires assembly in order to function as a display stand for the calendar. The user interacts with the product when assembling the animal pen, which enhances his connection to Furry Friends Farm and allows him to appreciate the fact that by purchasing the calendar and assembling the animal pen, he is helping to build a home for the animals at Furry Friends Farm.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in June 2017 and was completed in October 2017 in Selangor, Malaysia.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We arrived at the current calendar design based on lessons learned from past experience. The 2016 calendar was a regular calendar. 1,000 pieces were produced and launched in December 2015, but only about 200 pieces were sold. We then enhanced the design quality and incorporated a simple do-it-yourself stand for the 2017 calendar. 300 pieces were produced and launched in December 2016 and were sold out in a week. We learned that better graphic and interactive design increases interest and sales.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was to build a stable structure using card that can hold the weight of the 13 loose cards for a whole year. User-friendliness was also a concern, as we had to make sure that it is easy for users to fold and assemble. It took us more than 1 month’s study of building structures and experimentation with different kinds of folding and assembly methods before we reach the final iteration.
